As of today, my wearing-SPD-sandals-into-cold-weather experiment has taken a downturn. I rode from Falls Church out to Best Buns in Shirlington, and my toes were cold by the time I got there, and were cold all the way back. I had wool socks on, too! My only other idea is to get some waterproof socks to squeeze in there as a water and (I hope) wind layer. Ultimately, it’s looking like I may have “to justify spending hundreds of dollars on warm feet.”
I’m pondering plastic bags over wool socks (possibly sandwiched by another sock). If that doesn’t work, I have mixed platform-spd pedals, and I’ll just go to wearing “normal” winter shoes.

But… these are knock-down assaults, with little warning or chance to draw. Clearly, we need to escalate:

ParticipantWaPo has more. The new metro access bridge should put some more eyes on the tail – I hope that’s enough the cut back on this nonsense.

ParticipantUhg – this is my route home when it’s dark. It’s either this, or one of the 4-6 lane arterials. Hopefully the future completed ART won’t build quite the same reputation.

ParticipantI finally got around to outfitting my Salsa Vaya for commuting, including building my first wheel. This morning was its maiden voyage in this configuration. It usually takes me a while to get used to a bike, but this one felt comfortable from the start.

LOL, my fault for going slow and trying to get a look at the deer:)
And you’d have venison on the table if only you had the proper equipment.

ParticipantI had to borrow a child for this configuration (the stoker):

You’d think with three kids on the bike, at least one would be willing to pedal on the hills.ronwalf

ParticipantAt 43 miles round-trip, my commute is too long. It’s not that I don’t do it (I’m trying for 2-3 trips a week), but that’s 3 hours of the day not doing anything ‘productive,’ instead of the hour a day that is spent on the days I drive. Family, work, church, and community could all use that time. On the other hand, I’m lucky in that half my job is to think. I managed to work out a problem that’d been vexing me for a week while biking in this morning, so that hour and a half was time well spent.
Last year, my commute was 12 miles round-trip. At 45 minutes a day, it was just as fast as driving and much cheaper (~$300/yr for parking), and so I never felt guilty about biking into work (and did so almost every day).

ParticipantDisclaimer: I ride all the time with rear panniers, sometimes loaded and sometimes not. I occasionally ride with a front load, but it’s a child (~40lbs with seat), not panniers.
I can see the appeal of front loading a bike. It smoothes out the ride, and it balances the bike a bit better for acceleration and climbing steep hills. That said, rear panniers are larger and cheaper, and balance isn’t critical unless the front tire is lifting off the ground on the down stroke.

Note that the bike shorts are not actually gold; they are lycra. I just got them last week.
That was last month’s shorts. This month’s shorts might be gold.
