Never having been to Beltway Brewing, I would suggest Old Ox. Old Ox has lots of space indoors for relaxing and watching a game or outside enjoying the good weather.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned these, but Pearl Izumi makes some very sneaker-ish shoes that have SPD mounts that have a rubber cover if you choose not to use them. I’ve never actually tried a pair, but they look pretty walkable and if/when your wife is ready to go clipless, you remove the rubber cover, attach the cleats, and you’re ready to go. I think I’ve seen them in just about every bike shop I’ve been in around here.

I have those shoes and while they work well as actual shoes, I wish I had gotten something different. They are flex-y and they are very mesh-y. Because of the cinch thing, they work well in summer months with light socks, and not so much in cooler weather; my thick socks don’t work. While I got them because I didn’t want to look too much like a cyclist, in the end I realized that was pretty dumb. I wanted/needed stiffer soles and more adjustment in the width.

Yeah, Team DRock is out for Monday, we’re flying back from the west coast. But, school starts the next day and the smaller members of Team DRock will be back in school and not needing camp drop-offs that interfere with coffee and pancake clubs…

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is opening a Virginia location near the Falls Church Whole Foods: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-guide/wp/2015/03/04/astro-doughnuts-fried-chicken-is-coming-to-falls-church/. Monday morning coffee club?

Looks like it opens tomorrow morning and then will have free food next week… “A new era of indulgence descends upon Falls Church when Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken opens its doors in Idylwood Plaza this weekend. The Washington, D.C.-based restaurant plans to debut at 8 a.m. Friday and hold a soft opening through Sunday with a grand opening – and a three-day string of limited free food – set for Monday, Astro co-owner Elliot Spaisman told the News-Press Tuesday.”

Today’s route: from my apartment complex, I climbed the Beauregard hill from Roanoke towards Seminary which was steeper than I expected (read: lots of huffing and puffing). Once I got to the top, after being blinded by that big flaming ball in the sky things were mostly okay save for a bit of nervousness at the fact that I had to maneuver into the straight lane at Beauregard/Seminary which has 2 right turn lanes (one is a slip lane). After that, it was a nice downhill as the road became Walter Reed which I used to access the W&OD before using Park Dr to get through Arlington Forest and eventually into Ballston.

Team DRock did this route after the Port City Brewing ride over the winter. It was nice, but many hours after breakfast, the beer, lack of a promised food truck and a wrong turn, I was on empty climbing that hill. *shudder*

Should we get rid of all the bikes (and that’s not a sure thing), we will still have 1.5 bikes per person, not counting the three frames…

The Thunder Ridge climb on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Big Island on the James River goes from 700 feet to about 3900 feet over just about 13 miles. Never gets above 8% and averages probably about 6%. Nothing at the top, but at the bottom there’s a parking area/bathroom, or you could go east on 501 for less than a mile to get to a gas station and restaurant.

It’s about 15 miles away from my home in Lexington as well, if anybody needs a place to camp (only have one spare bed.)

My only memories of Big Island are that it smelled terrible. The paper plant did the air there no favors.

There is a map somewhere showing the locations where bikes are stolen. My “takeaway” is that bikes aren’t “really” stolen west of Ballston. I have parked my bike unlocked outside both Tysons and Tysons II malls with no issue and I usually leave my bike outside the Whole Foods in Vienna unlocked. I too have employed the SteveO method of finding a little underground corner in a garage in which to hide my bike and the Dread method of hiding it amongst nicer bikes.

I was an associate at a very large law firm and am partner at a (normal sized) law firm and my husband has a job with a more flexible schedule then mine. I drive more and bike less to work than he does for many reasons. Mostly it’s because I have to go to work events that I (feel like I should) drive to: lunch today in Crystal City, early breakfast Friday morning in Tysons and I need to do my hair and makeup. Sometimes its because I’m worried I will get a call from the mountain biking camp at Lake Fairfax to pick up a kid because he fell and broke his arm. I don’t ever decline to ride because I need to clean the house or get groceries or because I’m anxious that my house is dirty and food-free.

I’m not afraid to ride on most streets around here and I’ve gotten over my fear of riding in the dark. I don’t like snow/ice riding, but I promise I’ll try harder not to cry the next time ice or slush appear.

I am not worried I will be attacked while out riding; at least not anymore than when I would worry about safety while walking to my car or driving down the road.

    TL; DR.

All that said, the reason why I did not ride a Citi Bike in New York when I was there in March is because the battery on the kiosk thingy was dead. I really, really, really wanted to ride in the snowstorm and was thwarted at every move.

Who put the “kick me” sign on my back this morning? This morning’s commute consisted of a lost school bus (are you turning? are you stopping?), three bad passes by cars (really, why do you pass me as we both approach a stop sign?), stop signs ignored, and the cherry on top, one middle finger. Today can only get better. Right?

Although brewery visits was covered in the initial linked article, revisiting Team D-Rocks’ beerneuring locations is a good start: Atlas, Right Proper, Blue Jacket, Mad Fox, (Caboose), Old Ox, Cap City..

Mosaic in Merrifield is a super easy place to get to via bike where you can eat a lovely dinner and see a movie.

Lazy Sundae in Falls Church is a good after-dinner ice cream stop on the W&OD. You could even visit for pancakes!

GB knows the western coffee locations, but going east, Café Kindred in Falls Church is very nice.
