It’s a short and sweet one, but if you haven’t ridden the downhill from Fort Myer through Arlington National Cemetery, it’s a beautiful ride (and very DC, despite being in VA).
I have ridden that way, but only in the dark. I will do it in the day light sometime soon. I do love going through Fort Myer and seeing the recruits going through drills. Wish I still had a capital region base pass so I could ride around other bases again.
I also have a bunch of short items as well: explore more of NE DC (around Takoma, Manor Park), write something up about all the hidden hills in Anocostia and adjacent MD beyond what the Hills of Anacostia cover, ride the North Fork Trail near Seneca Rocks again,… and some Strava based I will admit with shame.
I want to try to get back all the KOM’s in Fort Dupont. My hope is they will not last long as more people ride out there after REI gets involved making it their pet project. BTW, if you are house shopping in DC, do not dismiss looking in Anacostia. Between that revival and the the soon to open Busboys & Poets, the gentrification wave will turn into a Tsunami and consume everything up to Eastern Ave.

ParticipantI plan to write up the rules on my two soon and post. My move to Denver may occur before the end of BAFS, if so I will be looking for someone to handle the handling of the prizes. I will still find/produce them but may miss the ending party.
I almost find it disappointing BAFS ends on a Saturday. Having to go to work the day of and the day after kinda defines the pain of bike commuting.

While bringing in hp100 (and festive 500) miles would be nice, Jan 1 is a good start date, mostly to avoid travel and family time complaints.
I think it goes too long though. It usually warms up nicely by the second week of March.
It seems to me it should include the Christmas travel period especially since riding at this time period may be more complicated. This is not a contest about pleasurable riding, but pain in the butt riding. Having to explain why you need to travel with a bike to get in your sleaze rides sounds perfect for such a contest.

ParticipantWhile I will not be here next year, I support this idea. It would make sense to have it be all of winter, Dec 21- March 20, and make sure the Hains Point 100 day is included just in case it falls before the Winter Solstice.

I don’t ride through there during weekday rush hour but have found that the no turn on red sign to be very useful! Now if only we could get the same thing at the next intersection heading west on the Custis.
I am up for getting rid of right turn on red everywhere for all times. I am old enough to remember the fights over it’s introduction and was not convinced then as a child and am still not.

Wow, are those reflective Velocity rims? I have always wanted a pair but never gotten around to getting some.

ParticipantFirst ride this morning to work on the 30/32 Specialized Roubaix Pro 2BR. I am finding it tough to not buy another and replace the Bonti on the front. I love it. Rolled fast, cornered great, holding air well without a tube, had a good smooth feeling ride, and shrugged off one hard pothole edge slam.
It seated up with only a little difficulty on my Stan’s Grails. Like most Specialized tires, it is huge. It has about 0.5 cm clearance to the chain-stays on my Salsa Colossal.

this thread is on page 14. If it hasn’t already been decided, it won’t be.
This should have never been a thread or a poll, it should have been a decision without any consideration of whom types the loudest. We all know on this issue, plus many more, there can never be a consensus or even an accommodation.

Yes, your insistence on internal cable routing eliminates almost everything in the wide tire/useful frame category. (If you want it, you want it, but it is kinda counter to the “make it simple and maintainable” philosophy. The fact that it exists at all is a testament to the fact that there’s a bike for everyone.
)
I would advise you to stay away from internal cable routing. It is annoying and offers no better weather resistance than running full cable housing. There are many real good reasons to run full housing. The weather resistance, reduced cable friction, and lower housing/end system compression are so wonderful . The few minor negatives are: the weight (few grams), how unfashionable it is, how ugly zip ties holding the housing can be, NS empty normal cable stops can be sharp when not filled with cables.
That being said, I then recommend something like a Surly Straggler. Disc brakes, can handle 35 knobbies, no expensive, not wimpy.

ParticipantI say let the ELF rider in, will give us the opportunity to save all his tracks as to hold as evidence against him. December 10, 2015 at 10:47 am in reply to: while we’re talking tires…good compromise between gravel and slick? #1042611Raymo853
ParticipantI ended up ordering one of the Specialized Roubaix Pro 2BR last night. At just $40, it was nearly half the price of a Sectour or Schwalble One.
I may not like the company, but only have good memories of the last pair of their road tires. The pair had the similar mixed width: 25 tread & 28 casting. Those tires were huge, bigger than other randonneurs’ 30’s and 32’s. They cornered great, were tough and lasted a long time. Actually I think one is still being used by a buddy on a back up bike.
If it turns out to be ok, I expect to order another and then a set of 38c Triggers for my gravel bike.

ParticipantAfter getting a my third classic pinch flat on my Bonti AW2 Hard Case Lite 28C on Stan’s Grails, I am buying a new tire today. Want: wider (30-32), tubeless, tough, and low rolling resistance. Thinking either hozn’s Schwable S-One, Hutchinson Secteur or Specialized Roubaix Pro 2BR .

Might add a bonus prize for this one if it turns out to be anyone other than Eric Williams. His ride into PA during BAFS 2015 gave me this idea.

ParticipantI assume this is a good place & time to announce my two ideas for pointless prizes that I will buy/make/freegan appropriate prizes for. Terse descriptions:
1: Visit the most States in one ride. Must include DC, VA or MD. A MD, WV, VA, PA ride would count as 4 but a Rhode Island, Mass, Conn, New York, Vermont ride would not count at all. Ties broken by length.
2: Visit the most DC bike shops in a ride. Photo of you or your bike in front of the shop required. Hopefully would get people to search out those small obscure shops. Box Stores would not count. Ties broken by my assessment of shop obscurity or length. -
