ParticipantOk guys, so how about a recommendations for a helmet mounted light? No need for a billion lumen or anything silly – I have a nice set of bar mounted front lights, but am interested in something that I could “aim” in the dark on the Custis or the last bit in my very dark neighborhood on the ride home. And preferably not more than $150.
[Not certain whether it makes sense to continue this thread here or the equipment section…]

ParticipantHoly moly I realized that I am truly a Southern European on my commute in this morning. 35F felt very much like 35F to me. And as someone who does not really understand standard measurements, it felt a heck of a lot like almost freezing! :p
Sheesh I miss Italian winters…
On the whole my gear held up fine. This has been my coldest commute yet (ever)… and reinforces my willingness to be silly and participate in Frozen Saddles.

ParticipantWell, was outside at around 17:15 and it was a perfect evening. Left work a bit after half past on my bike and it was raining and blustery. And it proceeded to all end about 5 minutes later. So all in all, not a bad evening commute, despite the wet shoes.

ParticipantGreat morning commute. Naturally, did not check the temperature this AM, so was clearly overdressed.
But sweatin’ a bit more never hurt…

ParticipantSteve, that’s impressive. No issues during the HS “I need to borrow the car” years (I ask as I am rapidly approaching this)?

ParticipantOT: Thank you dasgeh, I knew that spending time on this forum during working hours was actually a way to learn new things…

ParticipantHave you considered bicycling-specific winter vests as an option? They would then leave your arms “exposed” but do most of the work in terms of wind blocking.
You could even consider vests that have a portion of the back as mesh – you still get the wind-breaking bits on the front but without the sauna effect.

ParticipantAs another relative newbie, welcome on board!
1. Freezing saddles (my first year of real cold weather riding also);
2. Bianchi. Celeste. Always a good sign.
3. Looking forward to running into you at some point.Powerful Pete
ParticipantGiven the number of bikes, accessories and other cycling related doodads I possess, I think that my cycling habit costs more than commuting by car would.
But I love every aspect of it – the riding, the salivating over new bits to buy, the buying, etcetera. So it is worth every penny.

Based on the research I did when the Alfine Di2 was annonced I don’t think you can run Di2 with a belt drive. At least without a specially machined carbon drive cog.
This conversation rreminded me of the coolest aline/best bike I’ve seen. This guys works inmy building, its a really great looking ride: http://www.englishcycles.com/custombikes/julians-winter-bike/

ParticipantCold morning but it did not make me suffer… am I already getting used to this weather? Could it be?

ParticipantNever understood the plastic bag trick – doesn’t it make your feet sweat like crazy and then become very cold?
Nice shoe covers (aka “booties”) work quite well. If one suffers from cold feet then the investment in good quality winter cycling shoes is also a good option.

ParticipantWonder how chilly it will get after sunset.

ParticipantTrue. Or was it simply warmer this evening?
