I haven’t taken the REI class, but you could probably pick up a lot of what they teach by going on a few group rides – maybe pick a slower pace group so you can ask questions. It sounds like you have the right attitude, i.e. “hills and traffic are dangerous things.” That is just natural. The next step is converting that sense of danger into one that is moderated by an ounce or two of “feeling of control” then you’ll be golden.

All I can think is “man that would make for an even sweatier back.” Maybe in winter?

Sounds rough, but understand this, the “wheel rut” fairies only strike once a year – twice at most.

Had a great time – was pleasantly surprised by how much beer one can get at CapCity happy hour for 10 bucks.

Biking has a lot of knock-on effects for me – I am more focused, in better shape, and have plenty of meditative time each day to think about stuff and cats.

The Washington Times is like a confused teenager – it had its rebellious phase back in 2009-2010 against its “father,” i.e. the Unification Church, and now it is just trying to muddle its way through high school being the “outsider.” I can’t wait until it goes to junior college – EXCITEMENT.

I’m going to be REALLY late – what is the general consensus on people being there around 7ish/esque?

Wow – that is a haul by any means. Still, congrats on the job – that is simply amazing turnaround time given the general state of things.

This week looks to be a vast improvement. Temps in the 80’s and dew points in the low 60’s. But also mostly cloudy and some rain here and there. It’s summer so thunderstorms can popup nearly anytime. Please check the radar and weather before heading out.

Riding in this morning was damp but FANTASTIC! Sad that 85 feels like a walk-in cooler now.

If you were thinking about jumping or crashing into the river to cool off, don’t bother. The water is 94 degrees.

Yeah definitely had a bathtub like feel to it today. Where’s my ducky!

When I was riding around in the Falls Church Apocalypse Zone this past weekend I kept giving a weird four finger salute at each intersection. I didn’t think anyone understood it until a guy rolled up beside me and said “Four way – right on.” He was driving a Tercel.

Kudos to the work crews that cleared the Custis – they even raked a lot of the debris off the trail – smooth ride in this morning to sweet-sweet office AC.

I did a century on the Eastern Shore (the 6 Pillars ride I think) where the Garmin ended up showing 199 feet of elevation change for the whole ride. It wasn’t my mind that was numb, it was my rear end…

I remember doing the Surry Century back in 2003 and basically having repetition-induced posterior amnesia from the underwhelming flatness. On the upside, the last 50 miles were straight into the wind.

The sun started getting to me by West Falls Church – but I was pretty close to home. Stopped twice to refill my water bottle with tepid fountain water. UPSIDE – NPS put out a sprinkler by the Lincoln Memorial – nice.
