I’ve talked about Clif 2 Mile Challenge in the past. The idea is to get people to leave their cars at home and take more trips by bike. Sounds like a great sort of challenge for people on this board. You don’t have to be an endurance cyclist to be awesome at this challenge… in fact it is likely easier for people who don’t do long rides. The people who consistently do well in this challenge are the people who just ride around town doing what they do.

Here’s the kicker this month: If they get 10,000 cycling trips registered in July, Washington Area Bicycle Association gets a $10,000 grant from Clif.

    Here’s the blog entry: http://2milechallenge.com/challenge/July_2012_Challenge

Sign up is easy and quick. The interface is really easy to enter your trips… Just put in mileage and an optional comment about your ride and click enter. You don’t need a GPS. The mileage doesn’t have to be exact. They really want to count the number of times during the day or week that you got on your bike. You’re able to enter up to 4 trips per day.

This has been one of my favorite riding challenges for a while because it gives a TON to organizations that really work for better bicycling.

Let me know if you have question.

I’m in. Note to all: it appears you can’t make corrections once you enter your data so be careful with the sticky fingers out there!

You are able to make changes for rides that day. You’ll see an “Edit” button to the left of your recorded trips for the current day.

I signed up for this one last year, but only posted a couple of rides since it really seemed to be targeted at that time for the short trips and I almost never was on the bike for less than 6 miles. I’ll check it again.

I have 9 trips logged already :D (I started logging in the end of June to get me into the habit)

As far I can tell, you do have to log your miles by the end of the day you rode them. You can’t log miles a single day late.

You can… they don’t mind if you do. You’re just limited to 4 trips per day. If you do 2 trips per day and miss a day, you can make it up the next day.

Just so I understand this . . . yesterday, I took three trips totalling 32 miles. For purposes of logging in this challenge, I combined them and entered one trip of 32 miles. Reviewing this thread, I think this was a mistake. I should have logged each trip separately, because each one counts (up to four per day), no?

Just want to make sure I do this in a way that benefits WABA. Thanks.

Yup. Trips are more important than mileage on this challenge. Most people log their commute to work and commute home as 2 trips.

This challenge should be very easy for any who live near Shirlington or other local “urban villages”. I’ll shoot for at least three or four trips daily. (4 a day is the max)

Thanks everyone for registering and logging those miles for WABA! As the previous poster has already replied, I’ll just reiterate that CLIF Bar is looking for trips, not miles. And the trips can be logged from anywhere in the country, so if you have friends who ride daily in much more temperate climes, please ask them to register and log miles to help us make up for the possible slow down of bike trips in DC’s wicked July heat!

I am confident that we’ll be the first 2012 beneficiary to reach 10,000 trips. The inaugural May challenge benefiting BikeWalk Kansas City and the June challenge winner, Los Angeles Bike Coalition only got to 6590 and 8900 respectively. We need an average of 323 trips per day, or 162 people logging 2 trips a day OR 81 people logging the maximum 4 trips per day to get to $10,000 for WABA. Piece o’ cake, right?

CLIF Bar and WABA will also be picking some lucky cyclists from those who log miles to win CLIF Bar and WABA swag too!

    Thanks again for your help!

I almost missed logging yesterday’s rides. I’m using the Bike Brains app that’s tied to the contest, but still needed to press the “share” button after my ride (I thought it would be automatic, until checking the site today).
