I expect not since he photographed the license plate. Be glad it didn’t happen in Alexandria where authorities have decided hit and runs are allowed.

The key measurement you need to preserve to keep the handling of your bike the same is called “rake”. It is the distance between parallel lines running through the center of the head-tube and the center of the axle. See http://calfeedesign.com/tech-papers/geometry-of-bike-handling/ for a good explanation of the relevant concepts.

Also fork length (distance from axle to the seat for the lower headset race). E.G., you don’t want to replace a long fork that has room for big 35c tires and fenders with a short track fork that barely has room for a 23c tire. Rake is important but it’s not everything.

When I am effortlessly passed by an ebike while pushing against the wind on the MVT or going up a hill on the Custis, then, yeah, I think that there is a fairness issue

Gotcha. Personally my experience is that electric cargo bike interactions far outnumber electric commuter bike interactions, and I’ve not yet seen one of those sort speedy cheater road bikes. But that makes sense.

I take it you didn’t like my attempt at a joke.

Am I only allowed to “respond” to your suggestion with humorless prose?

Ok, I’ll try. From what I can tell, over half the points scored are scored on road bikes weighing less than 25 pounds. And most with ebikes here are not only riding fewer miles, but doing it with a lot of sometimes squiggly cargo. With the current demographics there’s no need to banish ebikes to the slacker pit. This isn’t boxing or wrestling with pre-match weigh-ins. Even if we cared about fairness (shouldn’t Rod outscore Eric considering his trailer weight?), there’s no need to treat ebike riders here as if they’re using EPO.

Maybe we should use a race of champions to settle this. sjclaeys rides the Bike Arlington bullet with 120 pounds of dead weight in the cargo box to simulate kids (note: some of us have logged BAFS miles with more live with than that). Tim Kelley rides sjclaeys’ bike. If sjclaeys wins, then ebikes are banned from engaging their motors for BAFS miles. Hold the race as part of Megabeth’s HP 100 ride. Sound good?

I find it especially interesting that the APD repeatedly tell us that they can’t enforce violations of traffic laws (3 foot passing, aggressive driving) without witnessing said infraction yet in this case, the officer took eyewitness testimony from a single eyewitness to write a ticket.

I would not call the person operating the car an “eyewitness”. It seems all too plausible he was distracted and it was precisely his NOT watching what was around him that led to the crash. An eyewitness would be a disinterested third party, and from what I’ve read here, the police did not have one, did not witness the crash, but issued a citation anyway.

Almost ruined your dress shoes? Yikes. If you want waterproof shoe covers, buy some latex nuke boots, they run about $8 a pair if bought individually. I’ve been using the same pair over my normal shoes on rainy days for a few years now. They’re even uglier than the quintessential yellow rain jackets everyone seems to use on rainy days, but also more effective.

Does anybody have Bob’s contact info? Because it looks like his forum account has been hacked by someone who thinks there’s a point to BAFS…!

Great idea. More practical than the forum tag that ended up permanently clipped to my commuter rig, leaving me unmarked on the other bikes. And visible from multiple angles.

Would you please make sure Eric Williams’ weighs at least 10 pounds, unless he’s on my team?

Nothing at all against non-young developers. I just meant that if I were 24 and unattached, I’d probably volunteer to take over. Since I’m older than that and married with two children, I’ll make a smaller contribution.

I think there’s an inverted bell curve for contribution availability of family types. Time decreases in the mating years, nearly evaporates in the nursing years, then, I hope, reappears as the juveniles gain independence, probably returns in full strength when the nest empties.

For me, the local grouping improved the social aspect. I’ve ridden BAFS twice, but only participated in team rides the year I was on a regional team and had rides starting less than 10 miles from home. Sure, I saw more of my teammates than others, but it was nice at least socializing with real people instead of just bickering with jrenaut and hozn online. ;-)

To quickly and concisely capture opinions on local teams, I have posted a poll:http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?9627-Poll-should-Freezing-Saddles-offer-quot-local-quot-teams

I don’t want to ask people whether they want to be on a local team unless they actually have the option to be on a local team. That’s just a recipe for confusion.

I would prefer not to have local teams. Last year, they were apparently so unpopular that people like me who didn’t want to be on them got stuck on them anyway. But if the group thinks otherwise, I’ll go with the group. I just need to know quickly, so I can finalize the form.

As this is a volunteer-led game, I think whoever steroid up to make the team assignments should get the final say, but I just posted a 3-day poll to make it easy to capture & tally opinions on this: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?9627-Poll-should-Freezing-Saddles-offer-quot-local-quot-teams

Campy deserves credit here for supporting triples well. Even the Veloce brifters you can get from the UK for under $100 shift triple FDs. None of that Shimano craziness of different shifter SKUs and supply/demand driving availability down and prices up for the triple shifters.

Count me as another fan of the “local” team groupings. Team rides are part of the fun, and I’ll spare you all the full sermon, but I’m not going to ferry my bike on top of the car just to go for a ride. I like to leave the iceberg melter parked as much as possible (and I’m too cheap and busy to use Metro). So I really hope whatever kind souls tackle the team assignments will try to honor preferences for local teams.

cvcalhoun, didn’t last year’s form ask about local team preference? Would you please add that question back in, even if you think you need to add a caveat that there has been some debate and we might not factor your answer into team assignments?

So if anyone knows a young Python developer with time on his/her hands, perhaps you might suggest they take part.

“Young” developer, huh? Damned agism even when asking for volunteers. You realize Guido himself is nearly 60, right? GRRR. If intended as a joke, NOT FUNNY.
