Saw Mr. Eighth heading around the Jefferson and heading across the Potomac this afternoon.

How did I miss you? I was in a hurry this evening, but still…

Also my right brake is my front brake on all but one of my bikes.

As it should be (except when using big, chunky, studded tyres that preclude running a brake at all.)

Only because it’s been over seven hours and no one has pointed it out yet…
There’s a very good reason bike short manufacturers go to all that trouble to eliminate or flatten seams.
Wearing gear past its useful life is another matter entirely.

    Phil Wood cogs.
I have ridden with several sizes of Surly cogs and—for me—the savings per cog aren’t worth the cost in ride quality or chain wear.

Yarp. At least 1.5mm. There just isn’t room for the Tektro or Shimano brakes. I believe the Paul brake fits.

I blame the extra .5mm for all the drag…
Actually really glad I ditched the front brake this morning—not really all that useful in slippery conditions and I rode smarter and smoother knowing it wasn’t there.
Glad I had a chance to drop in and say hi, regret not having used the chance to properly introduce myself to some of the folks I recognized from the forum.

DeFeet makes an awesome heavy wool sock as well. Actually, I stick with DeFeet wool socks for my biking and rowing sock needs year-round. Now if only they made a dress sock…

CX tires today. Why take away the adventure prematurely?

Glad I got to say hi.
Snotsicles and stache-sicles are just evidence of a good ride.

I was in the area heading north around 11. On the red bike. Moving slowly, feeling old, and just plain thankful that the wind was finally at my back…
    Sorry I missed you.

I think you should test ride a few bikes, try to go for as long of a ride as the LBS will allow. Maybe visit a few reputable shops to get their recommendations on fit. You should be able to get pretty close on size of frame, then you can dial in stem length / rise later on. IMO top tube length is most important, seat tube or stand over clearance not as important.

I’m chuckling inside over the seat tube bit…but then, you’ve seen my rides.
But, seriously, good advice. Top tube trumps for me.
Test, hem and haw, and then test some more before you drop more money than you originally budgeted for.

And there was OneEighth again this evening coming out of the mist in the Roosevelt Island Parking lot. Of course, I was 30 or so feet away on the MVT, so no pleasantries were exchanged.

If one cannot make a dramatic entry, why bother?
Thought that was you, but wasn’t sure.
    Cheers!

I think the over-arching lesson here is clear: you are bullet-proof.

    I just ride.
Can’t even count cadence right now because I leave the watch at home when I switch to winter gloves.
    Be (happy).

I didn’t hear you at all behind me – but you passed very slowly and then slowed down in front of me. We kept pace all the way to my exit in crystal city – but it would have been great to talk to you on the ride – did you have earphones in so you couldn’t hear me?

    White tires on the fixie?
