ParticipantI’ll be at the Rosslyn pit stop for most of tomorrow morning with a WABA jersey on (probably taller than you, definitely shorter than Dirt). Say hello. And get your WABA Bikefest discount code from me, too.

ParticipantEnjoyed these, Greenbelt – thanks.
My challenge with my GoPro HD (which I’ve finally figured out how to reliably operate) comes in the editing stage. It’s just enormously time consuming, and I’ve found that my MacBook Pro (a few years old) doesn’t really seem to be up to the task. That’s a shame, as I think more videos like these could make folks feel a little more comfortable about getting out there.

ParticipantPretty sure there’s a YMCA just up the road from Farragut North. I imagine they’d be cheaper than the gyms (tho’ that Bally rate is pretty good – now just watch your card and make sure they don’t charge you more than that).

ParticipantSee what happens when you poke the weather people?

ParticipantYeah, the whole illegal by order of which the public has no practical notice thing is a bit problematic for me, but I don’t think I’d spend too much time on it. There are about 11 million things I’d rather get from NPS first.

ParticipantDo you wear a helmet when you get in your car? If not, why not? It would be safer if you did, no? A helmet is not the end-all be-all of safe cycling. It’s annoying to see the presence of a helmet substituted for an informed judgment of circumstances.
I’ve seen a number of folks on CaBi’s with a helmet. I’ve rarely seen earbuds in (and I’ve seen hundreds, if not more, on CaBis). So my experience doesn’t line up with yours at all.
That said, it’s about education and culture. When most of the people on bikes are stopping at lights, people are far more hesitant to blow it on their own. When most people are in helmets, folks new to it feel less dorky. I think it’s far more effective to lead by example than admonish over perceived mistakes.

ParticipantI’ll find the WashCycle thread that sorted it all out at some point, but, per order of the superintendent, no cyclists on the GW Parkway, end to end.
(And yes, I’ve been one of those south of Alexandria cyclists. Was perfectly safe.)

ParticipantThis is neither legal nor recommended. I’m guessing those were three rather lost cyclists.

ParticipantThe film is called Bicycle Dreams, and played here late last year. http://www.bicycledreamsmovie.com/
(Sadly, Jure Robic, multiple RAAM winner and part of the movie, was killed by a car during a training ride near his home, last year.)

ParticipantCredit to Dogfish Head, which has been great with local fundraising efforts for cycling. Even if they didn’t already make some of my favorite beer, I’d go out of my way to support them for the support they give our community.

ParticipantThe cyclist was Fitzgerald Pollard, 44, of Arlington. Per ACPD:
[He] was riding his bicycle south on South Walter Reed Drive, turned right onto the access road of Four Mile Run Drive and crossed into oncoming traffic. Mr. Pollard then struck an occupied vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
No additional information has been released by ACPD

Still waiting to see an identification, have not seen this information. Hoping I just don’t know where to look.
I think the ACPD knows who it was, but just haven’t announced it yet.

ParticipantI held her in my arms, but it wasn’t you.

ParticipantI don’t quite get the idea of relying on CaBi as a part of daily commuting. All it takes is a small number of people in proximity to get the same idea to make it impossible (as has apparently been made clear today). It’s like signing up for ZipCar and expecting to use it to drive to and from work every day.
I do think they could improve ubiquity and balancing, but I don’t think meeting the needs of daily commuters should be the target.

ParticipantDirt, this thread was just used as an example in a continuing education class for transportation planners (that I happened to be sitting in on). When I saw that you were a Most Senior Member, I had to stifle it.
That is my contribution to this thread.
(Well, that and that I’m working for the Gold Team, these days.)
