ParticipantVaden is currently also closed for construction (5/7/20). Coming from the west I got across by walking my bike through the metro concourse.

ParticipantIn Philadelphia, bicycle shops have been declared essential businesses and can stay open during the pandemic:

ParticipantThis year I made a vow that I was not going to let Freezing Saddles influence my behavior: I was just going to keep riding all winter, the way I normally do, and try to make my weekly mileage goal. I kind of stuck to that goal. Ok, so a few days I felt guilty when I didn’t hit the 10-mile mark. Once that was because of a computer/user error. Sigh. There doesn’t seem to be anyway to correct that. And, yeah, I did go for a long-ish ride (without any errands! or maybe just one, at the end) to get some more miles. But hey I need the conditioning anyway. And I loved the extra motivation to get out to ride to meet other Freezing Saddles riders. I like the idea, suggested earlier in this thread, of more competitions. It reminded me of one reason I prefer competing in triathlons to bike racing — there are age group prizes (which I actually had a chance of winning) as opposed to just category-based prizes (not a prayer).

ParticipantInterested. Sent private message re: arranging pick-up.

ParticipantGreat idea! Great ride! Thanks, Jessica, for organizing.

ParticipantI’ll be there.

ParticipantSorry, I don’t see the group. And my name appears to have vanished from the leaderboard — because I’m not in the group? The four team members who showed up at HH last night wanted a team name having something to do with “18 wheeler”. Sorry I’ve forgotten what was suggested. But for now, I really need instructions on how to find the Team 18 group (?) and get myself into it. Josh, you can transfer ownership to me, once I/we figure this out.

ParticipantHow many years does it take to constitute a curse? I am trying to get through a January car-vs-bicycle “issue” — hmm, maybe I shouldn’t mention it until the month is over. On January 6, 2019, I was hit by a car as I was crossing Lee Highway eastbound on the W&OD. (Do you remember my black eye when I showed up for Happy Hour?) That statistic just served to reinforce the decision to replace that surface crossing with a bridge. On January 10, 2018, I was hit by a car in a crash that was partly my fault — attempting to cross in front of a line of cars stopped at a red light one block up. Never assume the drivers will see you. I guess that’s why one of the first questions the police officer at the scene asked me was, “Did you make eye contract with the driver?” !!! Seemed very weird (and impractical) at the time.

ParticipantHmm, here’s my problem with this one: If I do one bicycle ride, and I run four errands on it (not atypical), would I have to divide it into four rides in order to get credit for four times of adulting? Or could I tag/name the same Strava ride with four different tags, eg (from a recent ride) #FS2020Adulting Gym, #FS2020Adulting Breakfast Club, #FS2020Adulting Harris Teeter, #FS2020Adulting Post Office? (Each place is more than one mile from the previous place and more than one mile from my house.)

ParticipantThanks for posting. I’ve been a fan of Forester’s for quite some time, since before his rupture with the League of American Bicyclists. In fact, I got my certification through LAB so long ago that I was an “Effective Cycling Instructor” rather than a “Licensed Cycling Instructor”. Some good stuff there, and nice to review the history.

ParticipantCheck out the Alice Austen house — it’s only a mile or two from the ferry.
You can get down to the south end of the island (Conference House Park is pretty nice) via Hylan Blvd, and back via Arthur Kill Blvd. Don’t go near 440 except to cross over the Bayonne Bridge. You can get to Staten Island via ferry from lower Manhattan to Jersey City, and then ride down to the bridge. Not tremendously scenic (except for the ferry crossing) or agreeable, but doable.
BTW, “kill” comes from old Dutch meaning “creek”. But that doesn’t stop residents of Philadelphia from dubbing the Schuylkill expressway the “Sure Kill”.

Hello Everyone, this is an update for Saturday’s Bicycle Fun Club Ride featuring a selection of Arlington County’s Amazing Public Artworks.
This should be a lot of fun, so I hope you will join us! If so, please reply to this thread or by email, so I’ll know to look for you! If you know any one interested, they’re welcome, too!
I will have Arlington Arts hand-outs for everyone. The ride begins and ends at the “Dark Star” Sculpture, beginning at 9:30 am and ending around noon.
Those who are interested can meet beforehand for coffee/breakfast snacks at Compass Coffee, 1201 Wilson Blvd.
We will make our way over to Dark Star at 9:30 to see the solar alignment which occurs shortly after that. The ride features some of Arlington’s most interesting public artworks from Rosslyn to Ballston to Crystal City and Long Bridge Park. The ride ends at Dark Star around noon, and we may want to consider grabbing some lunch at Cava or Chipoltle, both of which are nearby. Below is a link to the route with links to each of the artworks.

This ride is open to everyone, and is comparable to Komorebi’s Alexandria water ride and Judd’s Lotus Blossom Fun Rides. The ride will be on Saturday morning, July 27, no-drop, using multi-use trails, bike lanes, and residential streets. Distance is approximately 16 miles total and is a variation of the Arlington Loop. There is a predicted break in the heat-wave, so I expect perfect biking weather.ltierstein
ParticipantWell, it finally happened: I crashed into an e-scooter parked near the edge of a bike/ped path, on the pavement. I was crossing the Key Bridge into Rosslyn last night. The block in front of the Marriott hotel is not well lit, and I was using my back-up light (the better light having been stolen recently, and just replaced by a new light that was at home, charging.) I didn’t even see the thing. Luckily, I was going very slowly, so there was minimal damage to my body and none I could see to the bike. A passerby (walker) stopped to help me. Next time I see a scooter parked smack dab in a walkway or path, I’m going to throw it on the grass, or over the bridge if it’s on one of the bridges.

ParticipantQuestions that came to mind if/when the lockers are going to be rented by the day: (1) Would it be possible to rent for a series of days, eg, you’re going away for the weekend and want to leave the bike at metro? (2) It had better be possible to see which lockers are vacant without having to try each one — a computerized display? Or first you put your money (ok, SmartCard) in and then you get to see the lockers available? (3) And what happens if your bike is still in the locker when the time runs out?
Don’t know about other stations, but within the past year or so, WMATA actually reduced the number of lockers available at Clarendon. The reduction coincided with the installation of covered bike racks — not secure, but at least protected from the elements.
