ParticipantKen’s Asian Bistro, on Huntington Avenue in Fairfax. No explanation necessary, I think. I would have taken a better picture, but I needed to remove my gloves to take the picture, and I did not want my fingers to fall off.
(oops upload problem will add back later)

ParticipantOkay. Whoever hasn’t heard the story is going to hear it.

No, my handle is NOT named after Mark Center.
Mark is my middle name. When I was a wee young lad, my parent’s favorite TV offerings were such Masterpiece Theater series as Elizabeth R, and The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth. Where every character was Lord of this, or Duchess of that.
I lived on Webster Avenue in Brooklyn. My dad with his mischievous sense of humor, decided to call me the Lord of the Mark of Webster.
Of course about this time I was getting into The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Which features Theoden, Lord of the Mark of Rohan. I don’t recall if that influenced the choice of nick name, but I think it may have.
About 20 years ago I was a somewhat prolific poster (are you surprised?) to a forum devoted to the PC game called “Civilization” Lord of the Mark seemed like a good handle (and made a bit more sense there). I used it on a couple of other gaming sites, so people would recognize me from one site to the other.
When I joined this forum I was not feeling very original and just recycled the old handle.
There you have it.

Oh my goodness, how did I miss a 77 page paper from the Conservative movement on the question of exercize on shabbat, with a section explicitly dicussing issues relating to biking. I will get back to y’all on this when I have had time to read and digest it.
quick notes
for those who view driving on Shabbat to synagogue as impermissible,
riding a bicycle to services is preferable to traveling by car. Indeed, even those who permit
driving to communal worship on Shabbat might find cycling preferable. Biking is undoubtedly a
greener alternative and makes one more a part of the natural landscape — Shabbat-compatible
qualities which add to its superiority over the automobile as a mode of transportation for the sake
of participating in Jewish communal life.76Yay!!!!! This, so much this!
We would limit the permissibility of riding a bicycle on Shabbat, however, to the
following set of circumstances: 1) to fulfill only those divrei mitzvah which take place on
Shabbat, e.g., for a mohel to officiate at a brit milah or for an individual to attend services or
programs of a specifically religious nature; 2) to obviate the need to drive to the synagogue on
Shabbat. In an area where the local synagogue is within comfortable walking distance, cycling
would not be a permissible substitute for walking; 3) the entire ride takes place within the limits
of an eruv; 4) it is understood that the concern of shema yitaken remains — in no way should this
specific exemption be construed as a green light to change a tire or fix one’s gears on Shabbat
because one is riding to shul.Boo! Since I can walk to shul – but can I say that the 40 minute walk via Fairlington is not comfortable? Maybe that is addressed further in the responsa? Or I can ask my rabbi? (of course people who live that close drive, but they are clearly in violation)
Also I need to make sure that putting a chain that has fallen off back on the gears does not count as “fixing”.

The forbidden activity is “carrying”. It is not permitted to carry an item outside an enclosed place on shabbat. But in that I am just as much in violation carrying an umbrella, or keys in my pocket. Someone driving a car is both carrying and igniting combustion, and is definitely in violation. My movement, Conservative Judaism, decades ago explicitly allowed driving for those who live outside walking distance of a synagogue. Given that, and that biking is clearly a lesser violation than driving, I feel fine biking to shul. Of course if I were more observant I would not post on shabbat. Someday.Oh my goodness, how did I miss a 77 page paper from the Conservative movement on the question of exercize on shabbat, with a section explicitly dicussing issues relating to biking. Hey Everyone.
Some might know, some might not – after riding for 15 years with a ticking time bomb in my chest the “bad valve of birth” finally said enough, and stopped being useful. Before it quit on me, it did do one last thing, and that was to enlarge an aneurysm on my Aorta.. Thanks Valve! SO, after a new aortic valve, aortic root, and a 10″ scar I’m near bionic.. well, just as soon as my sternum fuses back together.
All that to say, I’m 9 weeks into recovery and ready to get back on the bike and see your faces. I also have 2 weeks of disability remaining so I can get from Centreville to Arlington right now while I’m super bored.
Any Coffee clubs meeting up in the next few weeks? Anybody out there that even remembers who I am?
Miss you all!
Of course we remember! HDCC is still at Best Buns – I haven’t gone to CC in over 2 weeks because of the combo of Omicron and the weather (I am only seeing people outdoors till things get somewhat better, and IIUC all or almost all CCs are indoors when the temp is below 35 F) Hope to see you soon!

I don’t know about you, but I am bummed about this. A local shop group swallowed by Trek. We’ll lose more diversity to a corporate giant focused only on their own gear. Maybe some good employees too. (i.e. Bill Mould for one).
Oh dear. A (non bikey) friend of ours went to college with the owner of Spokes – I met him (and talked bikes, of course) at my friends New Years Day open house in the before times. Can’t blame him for cashing in, but yeah, it was nice having a locally owned LBS. The Fairlington Spokes is so handy to me I will probably keep going there. Phoenix Bikes is not far from here though.

If Team 13 is located in VIRGINIA and WANTS a different name, I have a suggestion that I have made before but IIRC has never been adopted by any Team 13 in the history of Freezing Saddles.

Can you believe this legislation was introduced in the Virginia legislature in 2022?!?

Currently in Virginia, the driver of a car faces a maximum fine for a stop sign citation of $250. However, convicted motorists are typically fined $101 for a red light citation and $88 for a stop sign ticket. This bill would impose a $500 fine and impound your bike for 6 months!
Maybe reason enough to indulge in N+1?
Apparently the sponsor has a grudge against cyclists, based on local conditions in his neighborhood. We must all try to avoid personalizing things so I will say nothing here about the good Senator, but those interested may find his wiki page interesting.
I don’t think there is a chance of this passing, but by all means lets contact our legislators. And lets support Virginia Bicycle Federation.
