It’s time for a roll call to get the group organized. Who’s attending? What’s your costume? What distance were you planning on doing?
Judd – Donald Trump – Short Route
Cameron – Skeletons in the Closet – Short Route
Steve O – Donald Trump – Middle Route
Sarah Bee – Witch Hunt – Not the long route
Chris R – Retired State Department Employee on a Bike –Who else?
LOTM – Redacted document – Middle Route

ParticipantIf we stick with the Mar A Lago theme, I will be printing out a redacted document and pinning it to my jacket – I can print out extras and hand them to the costumeless – remember “paid for by viewers like you”

ParticipantHaving recently learned how to redact a PDF, I have ideas.

ParticipantStrava says I did the last short ride at an average of 11 mph , including up hills, stops (as clipped by the garmin) etc

ParticipantI don’t know much about ebike rental rates. But I do want to warn that the DC side of the ALX – 495 – South Cap Trail loop has a couple of significant gaps where you need to read on street, that might be challenging to a newbie rider

This thread got me wondering if anyone has been struck WHILE riding. Again, exceedingly rare, but it does happen. However, Googled the topic and the third paragraph in this story about a lightning strike in Croatia gives me extreme pause.
Oh my. That was hard to read.

ParticipantOh wait, i already did this
2022 goals.
Exceed my 2021 mileage – should be very doable, as I am up to 360 miles now, and 2021 only rode 1600 miles. My best year was 2019, when I rode over 4400 miles, which will be hard for me to do until I am commuting more regularly. Well as I said, still trying
Make every actual commute to work by bike. I have certainly stuck to that so far. F**king injury. I had been 100% on this, but went in once by car.
Get back to more group rides, coffee clubs, and other social stuff. That’s been so helpful in overcoming pandemic isolation, and I need to do more. Definitely have been doing this.
Do an overnight bike trip of some kind. At least one. HARPERS FERRY. (and that sure beats my old goal of going to Great Falls. Still have not made it to Occoquan though)Get more of the gear that I am missing. Some, with help from my friends
Learn at least a bit more about maintenance. Well I did get a hint on how to put on a particular difficult bike tire, though I did not do it myself
Some bike advocacy stuff that I won’t go into right now. Well that’s pretty obvious, I guess.

Glad ACPD caught the driver so quickly. As someone who was also hit near there by a driver with a bad record, wish they (and others) did more to get dangerous drivers off the road.

ParticipantWatching me try to ride with a cup of coffee should be a treat for all.
Sadly, this will not happen this coming Wednesday, as I will still be in quarantine (even if I test negative between now and then, abundance of caution and all that …)

One more change to note
Wednesday Best Buns Coffee Club.
Due to excessive noise issues along Campbell Avenue, the club is relocating to the newly renovated Jennie Dean Park (3630 27th Street South). It is located across South Four Mile Drive from the MM0 W&OD trailhead and across Shirlington Road from the Four Mile Run Trail. Folks can grab their treats at Best Buns and then ride to the park.

It’s a hopeless muddle and largely unenforceable. Who knows what the legislature was trying to accomplish, other than provide a ham-handed response to some constituent complaints about being “blocked” by cyclists on narrow roads.
IIUC, it was one constituent, who tried to drive around some cyclists while pulling a horse trailer, the trailer fell, the horse died, and the rest of the General Assembly gave in to the sob story.
Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’

Can someone help me understand the impact of the new Virginia law going into effect (SB 362) which, “prohibits persons riding bicycles, electric personal assistive mobility devices, electric power-assisted bicycles, or motorized skateboards or scooters two abreast from impeding the normal and reasonable movement of traffic and requires such persons to move into a single-file formation as quickly as is practicable when being overtaken from the rear by a faster-moving vehicle.” This looks (to my lay eyes) like an update to § 46.2-905, which, to my surprise, already seems to prohibit taking a lane.
The cycling community has led me to believe that it is my right to take a lane, but the Virginia Code seems to indicate that we are for the most part restricted to riding single file, glued to the side of the road. What’s the story?
SB 362 seems to be in contradiction to many other state laws, and to the standard placement of sharrows, etc.
Personally I would not worry about it while riding in Arlington, Alexandria, City of Falls Church or Fairfax. If you are riding in a rural county and there is a horse trailer behind you, I would pull over and let them pass.

ParticipantRode the new South Cap trail. Very nice piece of infra. Yes, I took the “closed” path on the east (upstream) side of the bridge.
Any new infra on the Hill for me to see tomorrow?

no, it just requires redesigning the roads. but since that would affect vehicle level of service metrics, it can’t be done.
Some roads get redesigned. It just takes way more effort by advocates than it should.

One hell of a brave bear, crossing GW parkway there.

ParticipantSo, I rode up the MBT to the end at Mary Center. Fun hills.
Rode across Brookland to the Crosstown Cycle Track – still an annoying gap on Michigan just west of Monroe.
Did Kenyon and Warder (had to go around the block a couple of times to find the best place to see ALL of the Warder PBL).
