ParticipantThe trail will be restored along the Purple line when that is done, IIUC.
And the W&OD trail is not going anywhere. This is not a serious project. The best way to provide transit service to Leesburg is improved bus service on the Greenway. The rail line is being pushed by Loudoun County rail fans, afaict, not even by pols from out there.
Im very pro rail, but there are higher priority rail projects (can we finally get funding for the new Rosslyn station, first step towards a tunnel to Georgetown? For a yellow line extension to Hybla Valley?).

ParticipantIt’s not a good idea, IMO. If it’s done as light rail or commuter rail (rather than heavy rail metro) its not connected to an existing maintenance facility. It crosses multiple roads at grade – acceptable with the infrequent service on the Old W&OD RR, when the whole are was less dense – but to justify the investment in new track you’d need frequent service, and that level of road closure is simply not going to happen – so you would need an overpass at EACH road crossing. Adding to expense. It doesn’t actually give transit service to many dense areas – basically just old town Herndon, and Leesburg. There are several much more important rail transit projects around NoVa, not to mention bus rapid transit projects that need funding. Oh, and homeowners adjacent to the trail will fight this.
It’s a “crayonista” dream, no serious policy makers are interested.

ParticipantI will accept Fort Ramsey.
Not accepting the previous CSA fort – this is the Civil War DEFENSES of Washington. Ergo Union only. Sorry.

ParticipantI think the hashtag may need to be in the ride title rather than the comment field. Try that.

ParticipantIts supposed to be automatic.
Im not tallying manually. At most I’ll do an “audit” before giving the prize (even if the winner is someone i trust completely)

ParticipantI didn’t go that way I was heading up Eads to CC anyway, but the closure sign was still present at Eads and 4MRT (maybe they just haven’t gotten around to removing it?) And there was still tape etc at MVT just south of the 14th Street Bridge.
Edit: FOMVT reports the closure is extended to the 12th.

ParticipantAs of this morning, signage indicated that the MVT was still closed near DCA (related to the airliner disaster) until 2/10, which is today.

ParticipantI heard MVT was closed all the way to Dangerfield Island.
At least for the Arlington piece, I suggest using Eads instead (and the “lagoon” trail to get to the 14th street bridge – that part of the MVT is open, IIUC, and has also been clear of ice and snow for some time) I went that way this AM.

ParticipantI have heard that as of yesterday, MVT was ice and snow except at certain bridges where Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail cleared it.
Other trail info – I rode the Four Mile Run Trail on Thursday, it was quite rideable from Shirlington at least to South Meade (IE near the shopping center with the Giant) I have heard that there were issues on the boardwalk by the power facility.
W&OD was rideable from Walter Reed to Bluemont (that was the part I rode today) if a bit narrower in spots. Note most side connections to neighborhoods, like at 7th, or at Park, looked absolutely NOT rideable. Bluement trail was rideable, mostly, though narrower in spots. Lucky Run Trail (by Walter Reed) was rideable, with a couple of spots that were absolutely NOT (solid ice)
Last I heard Holmes Run Trail in Alexandria was still covered with snow.
Around Alexandria and Arlington there are still lots of ramps to crosswalks filled with snow. Bike lanes are iffy. In addition to snow in the bike lanes, cars are often parked well into the door zone bike lanes, as drivers compensate for snow near the curb.
