    1/1/2022 rhombus

The USPS logo on the blue mailboxes is a rhombus:

I sometimes think of the unofficial USPS motto (“Neither snow nor rain . . . .”) during Rule 9 rides.

Here’s my bike picking up dinner at Peter Chang’s in Arlington:

The Washington Post ran a profile of Peter Chang in 2015, describing how a boy who once earned less than 10 cents a day pulling weeds in China ended up building a restaurant empire in America: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/how-chef-peter-chang-stopped-running-and-started-empire-building/2015/03/16/66ff2378-c750-11e4-aa1a-86135599fb0f_story.html.

Money received, thanks! Check the comments in Venmo for your USPS tracking number. The package should arrive on Monday.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the poll or replied in the thread!

I already placed an order for the ankle bands, but I wanted to respond to a couple of ideas mentioned in the thread.

    • Helmet covers: I floated this idea a few years ago, but I got shot down by (1) the people with Lumos helmets who didn’t want to cover up their helmet lights, and (2) the people who feared the dorkiness factor. The consensus was that everyone who wanted a helmet cover already had one.
    • Toe covers: I personally would never use these. I switch to boots as soon as the weather gets cold.
    • Gaiter: There’s an easy solution for this one: 2021 gaiter + sharpie. :D

Reflective ankle bands narrowly edged out socks in the poll, 34% to 31%, so ankle bands it is. Coming soon to a happy hour near you, hopefully!

I’m in! I’ve never been, and I’m still bummed that my attempt to organize a group there on 1/1/21 got rained out.

Quick question: Do we sign up per person or per bike? Does a Tandem need one ticket or two?

Per person, please. Thanks, and see you there!

That works. I think most restaurants by the waterfront area will be pretty crowded, but Caphe Banh Mi is always delicious. Some good alternatives in Old Town North might be Yunnan by Potomac or St. Elmo’s Cafe. In Carlyle, Sweet Fire Donna’s and Tequila & Taco both have heated patios, if you’d prefer to eat outdoors. And there’s always Hops & Shine in north Del Ray.

Remember to get your votes in by Sunday, December 6! Voting will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Ok, newbie question – what is the primary intent of the identifiers, beyond waving and saying hello?

    The identifiers:

    1. help you identify other FS participants, either from this year or from previous years
    2. serve as a conversation starter, when people ask you why you have a bright green zipper pull/ankle band/gaiter/whatever
    3. establish your bona fides as a Rule 9 badass
    4. all of the above!

Cool! I plan to be there. What time were you thinking of getting to Founder’s Park? Also, I recommend bringing binoculars if you have them. The boats were pretty far away the last time I went.

Great idea! I’m looking forward to highlighting some of my favorite immigrant-owned businesses and hopefully discovering some new favorites.

    Ride report:

    – Towards the outskirts of Baltimore part of the trail was washed out with debris from a previous flood (or three) and after walking our bikes through a lot of trash the trail ended in large impassible fencing. No signage indicated the closed trail nor a detour but we managed. Detail of area in question attached.

    – A pretty considerable amount of the ride between the Baltimore and DC region was on uncomfortable roads with a good amount of traffic at high speeds. Even early afternoon on a week day. I found it rather unpleasant and would probably seek alternate routes next time. No close calls or anything and the drivers were considerate but it was loud and stressful always being on high alert.

Thanks for the ride report! Sorry to have misled you about the state of the trail — that’s a part of the Middle Branch trail that I haven’t ridden before. There’s another section of that trail that has the same problem — no signage in advance, no marked detour, no information online to indicate that the trail is partially closed. I find that baffling.

I was a bit surprised to hear about the heavy traffic. I usually ride that way on weekends, but I also took that route on a random Monday this past October, and the traffic wasn’t bad at all. If you find a better route, please let me know. I’ve tried a few different variations on the DC->Baltimore route, and the route I gave you is the best one I’ve found so far.

I mean if I could take my caffeine intravenously ……

I’m not a coffee drinker, and I’m usually not hungry that early in the morning. So coffee club for me is actually more like “hang out with friends and buy a pastry to eat later” club. But that doesn’t roll trippingly off the tongue. :)

So it was mentioned this morning that Whole Foods Thursday CC will usually be indoors for the winter (outside this AM, because nice weather). I am wondering which CC’s are planning to remain outdoors, which indoors, and for those that vary with the weather, if anyone could (I know this is a difficult ask) somehow specify the weather conditions that will lead to indoors (or to outdoors)?

For the benefit of those of us willing go to CC again, but not quite ready to eat indoors, even with vaxxed friends (or waiting to get boosted).

    TIA

It’s probably safe to assume that CC will be indoors for the next few months, unless it’s at least 50 degrees outside and there’s sun at the outdoors location.

Indoors locations are (I think) as follows: Mondays at Swing’s on E. Monroe, Tuesdays at Mah Ze Dahr on Crystal Drive, Wednesdays at Best Buns in Shirlington, Thursdays at Whole Foods in Pentagon City, and Friday at Misha’s on Prince Street. I generally keep my mask on when we’re indoors.
