1/7/21 – Moon
On January 7, 1610, Galileo discovered 3 of the moons of Jupiter. Creative entries encouraged, but if your photo of your “moon” is not apparent, please explain. Happy hunting!
1/7/2021 — moon. At the Lavender Moon Cupcakery in Alexandria. They weren’t open when I stopped by at 6:45 a.m., so I’ll have to come back for a quax another time.

ParticipantDonated! What a blast from the past: A similar “Feeding Saddles” fundraiser back in 2014 was what got me to finally stop lurking and sign up for Freezing Saddles.
Thanks for setting this up, rumipumi!

1/6/21 – Small Business that features beans. Happy hunting!
1/6/2021 — beans. Abyssinia Market in Alexandria. The owner suffered a despicable attack by a man who refused to wear a mask inside her store. The subsequent outpouring of community support restored some of my faith in humanity, though. I was glad to have an excuse to stop by and lend my support by quaxing.
Bean connection: Abyssinia serves “Ethiopian locally roasted yergacheffe coffee,” according to its Facebook page. I’m not a coffee drinker, so one of the Forum’s resident coffee snobs will have to tell me what that means.

Thanks for the insight to the chainsaw art….definitely on my to-do list!

Thanks for sharing the link to the tour, we’ll need to head out to VA to check it out!
Yes, the chainsaw sculptures are definitely worth checking out. If you end up riding to see them, my suggested RWGPS route is here. The cuesheet has more detailed directions than BikeArlington’s.

1/5/21 – on National Bird Day, take a pic of a bird. Let your imagination fly. Happy hunting!
1/5/2021 — bird. Here’s my bike at Sena’s Totem, a chainsaw sculpture by Andrew Mallon in Oak Grove Park in Arlington. There’s an owl at the top. There’s another bird perched on the windowsill on the other side, but I’m not including a photo of that side because of drevil’s hardarsedness.

Many thanks to Bike Arlington for putting together a tour of five of Andrew’s chainsaw sculptures, which inspired me to go check them out!

1/4/21 – In honor of National Spaghetti Day, take a pic of an Italian restaurant, preferably one you like and/or serves spaghetti. Caveat is that it can’t have “zz” or “Garden” in the name or the sign. Happy hunting!
1/4/2021 — Italian restaurant. Taken at Rosemarino D’Italia in Alexandria. I haven’t tried their spaghetti, but I can vouch for their eggplant parm.

ParticipantAt the Einstein Memorial outside the National Academy of Sciences:

It’s hard to see in the photo, but one neat thing about the memorial is that the circular base is a star map, with more than 2700 studs representing celestial bodies as they were positioned on the day of the memorial’s dedication.

1/3/21 – Elf or Wizard (as a nod to JRR Tolkien day). Happy hunting!
1/3/2021 — There’s a house in Alexandria that has an inflatable Will Ferrell from the movie Elf, but it was sadly deflated when I rode by this morning. My other idea was the same as DCAKen’s, the Washington Wizards:

Just got word that the Memorial Circle changes have been completed. Has anyone gone through yet? What do you think?
I went through this morning. NPS has laid down so much white paint and so many white flexposts that I think drivers are slowing down just because they’re blinded by the contrast between the white paint and the black pavement. But it did seem that the driver who stopped to let me go through the crosswalk started braking earlier than normal. So that’s good.
Further south on the Washington Boulevard trail, the trail still crosses two lanes of car traffic going from the GW Parkway to Washington Boulevard. NPS added flexposts along the lane markers in the car lanes — I guess to visually narrow the lanes for drivers? I estimate that the flexposts’ life expectancy is about three weeks max until drivers mow them down, but it was a nice thought.

Yes, once I have the gaiters, I’ll post ordering info here and on the FB page. Hopefully soon!

ParticipantI’m cancelling this ride — it looks like the worst of the rain will be precisely during the period when we’d be riding.
For tomorrow, everyone who’s not on my FS team should stay indoors, where it’s nice and dry. Everyone who is on my team should make sure to get outside and ride at least 1 mile, and preferably 10 miles.

Komorebi: Is there a sign-up sheet for the gaiter?
Not yet — I didn’t want to start taking orders until I could actually deliver the gaiters. I was supposed to get the gaiters before Christmas, but, well, 2020.
