Here a couple of maps. I don’t know why but for some reason Google Map sometimes doesn’t show hiking trails so I’ve attached a running route when I found it (then later went back on the bike). The red is the hiking trail which you can also bike. The yellow is an alternative if you’d like to stay on a paved trail and road. The tunnel isn’t initially obvious if you aren’t familiar with the trail because if you are coming southbound, the trail sort of stops and you have to go down the road a bit before you see the path leading to the tunnel. If you are going northbound, the tunnel is on the other side of the trailhead parking lot. With this tunnel you cross Muddy Branch Road and cut across from Darnestown to Great Seneca without going further down to the Kentlands or Muddy Branch Road.

This might help with another view. Ride w/GPS has a couple of different maps to use. OSM Cycle (Open Street Maps), gives the clearest diagram of where it is. Still, none of them show the wormhole which means a) they really don’t want to encourage people to use it and b) that’s the perfect description of a wormhole! Nice find. We have a couple of these in my area that I use in dry summertime, but not when it’s already cold because they’re pretty wet!
Oh hey – not to dwell on this too much (I’m a map geek) I just found something. Google Maps, in the left sidebar, has an option for Bicycling. This is what it shows when I turn it on — the wormhole! Also, look at the bottom of the screen where there’s a legend as to trails. I guess the info is there, just not well described. Either way, looks like fun!

Awesome pic! Where is the mural?
It’s in OneLoudoun – just off Russell Branch Parkway in Loudoun County.

A twofer day with Public Art and Picture of the day. I had an impossible time finding the mural. I had an address but that was not the mural site address. Without the keen eyesight of KBikeVA, I would still be stuck in OneLoudoun. (now to continue my story) a hard time tying the strings to the bike, but I was fortunate not to have the bike float up to the sky!!

And that’s why we don’t ride alone! What a fun day though. Thanks!

ParticipantCough, cough … who found the mural?

ParticipantGwen Thompson Briar Patch Park in Sterling, VA. It was packed with many happy children today!

This is one panel of a 4-5 panel mural on the back of Alamo Draft House at Loudoun One in Ashburn. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my bike into the photo and still get the photo. So it may be a DQ, but that’s okay. It was a good ride.

I had snapped a Re-Max sign early in the ride but I hoped to find something more exciting. Again, serendipity leads one to success.
Also, has anyone else had the experience that the next day after a particular subject is the challenge, you see them everywhere? Today I saw bells all over the place!

ParticipantThis wormhole takes one from a sedate neighborhood to a residential living facility, just beyond which is Choolaah, a great Indian restaurant. Think “Chipotle” style service but with Indian food. Their approach makes it possible to try a bit of everything, which is awesome.
The wormhole also avoids Rt. 7 which is wise. The neighborhood on the eastern part of the wormhole is mostly families who have immigrated from a variety of places in the last 10-15 years and this wormhole gets a lot of use by essential workers who use bikes or walk to work.
We found this wormhole when looking for new destinations for our “Last Weekend Brunch Adventure” rides for our bike club. It was popular enough to merit repeat visits!
It’s in Loudoun County, so a bit of a hike for some of you, but if you’re coming out this direction to try it out, let me know – I bike for Choolaah!

#FSWormhole
Its the hashtag to use on strava, hopefully it will be added to the leaderboard, and it would be easier to follow each other’s explorations.
So for you example your would write: #FSWormhole Back9
The Hashtag is for the back end the name is for all of us to learn a bit more about your discovery, hence the ones that are well explained here, look cool, or are ones that I would like to explore, sometimes gather extra points.
Sometimes a really good WormHole name will gather you extra points, which I will have to add at the end of the game, but the #FSWormhole will help with accounting. Either way, go ride, explore, have fun.
Ride on.
f.That makes so much sense now. Thank you!

ParticipantQueston to the #wormhole world. I don’t usually use Strava so this is all new to me. When I use a # for a wormhole, should the hashtag be only #FSWORMHOLE ? Or should we attach the name we’ve given it to that hashtag (example: #FSWORMHOLEBACK9)? In other words, how is it easiest for you, LuisFilipe, to find them? I am (sort of) playing several of the pointless prize games (really what occurs to me each day to do), so do I hashtag all of them in my Strava ride name? If I put all of that in the Strava ride name, do I also need to put something in the description? And if I take my photos while on my ride and include them in the Strava upload, does that give the host the info he/she needs (in addition to the hashtag)?
I’m under no illusion I’ll amass the most points and I’m not playing for that. At the same time, I’m grateful that you and others are offering up these games as it keeps things interesting and motivating, so I want to make sure I’m not making it more difficult for the people who are kind enough to host a pprize!

ParticipantSo glad this is here. I couldn’t do it last night during happy hour due to tech issues, so today I could come back. I think this is a great way, on behalf of the cycling community, to also give kudos to Bike Arlington for hosting Freezing Saddles. I mean – they don’t charge us anything to play so whatever we would pay for this much fun is what we should be donating to Feeding Saddles!

ParticipantI was struggling for a name for this one and when I zoomed in to look at surrounding street names, to my surprise I saw that the path itself has a name — “Back Nine Path”. Shorter is better so I’ve named this wormhole that takes you from the noisy cars of Fairfax County Parkway Trail to the serene neighborhood path in Franklin Farms — Back9.
No “gritty city” cred for this one — it’s a truly suburban wormhole featuring a muddy path, inviting wooden bridge, and paved asphalt.

ParticipantToday’s find is at the intersection of Fair Lakes Circle and Fair Lakes Parkway. I’ve always loved this piece. It’s big and bold and friendly.
