Untold Stories by Zachary OxmanZach Oxman captures the welcoming spirit of Robert E. Simon, Jr. in Untold Stories with the relaxed, open pose and a title that suggests a chance conversation.

“Mr. Simon, I heard you were a great storyteller. Tell me one, please”One of the best parts about Bob Simon was that he was a cyclist, even riding in a pedicab for Bike 2 School day with the local elementary school well into his 90’s.

ParticipantRe: Payphones
I would love to know where in NoVa/MoCo/PGCo/DC people found actual pay phones — just for perspective. They are definitely difficult to find. If you found one (and are in the local jurisdiction), would you mind saying where? I know Serdar and I did Gravelly Point (total props to him)

#ParkFinder – This former golf course is now a recreational park. The Rockville Bike Hub thinks this is a great location for a velodrome! Does anyone know how to get one started/funded?

ParticipantSeen in Alexandria today. Might have already been posted by Serdar since it’s near his home riding area. But it was new to me! I love these utility box wraps. I wish we had some in Fx County!

ParticipantI don’t know all of what has been reported in Alexandria West End as a wormhole. But just in case this one hasn’t, here it is. I called it Taney as it’s connects Taney Avenue on both sides of Taney park. The paved cut through is a new sidewalk (still very bright white). Anything beats riding next to Duke St (much less ON Duke St)!

Participant3/10/21 Payphone
This made me laugh. In 2017 I biked with a group from San Francisco to Santa Fe, NM. At the top of one of the mountain passes at a rest stop there was a full booth pay phone. Those of us over 50 got into a discussion about how we used to make collect calls from payphones to our homes, our parents would refuse the call, and then we’d hang up — having notified our parents we were ready for them to come pick us up from the (movies, bowling alley, etc.) The 20-somethings riding with us were aghast, never having heard of collect calls or even really used a ‘tethered’ or pay phone. It was hilarious to watch them try to wrap their minds around the concept of a time when people didn’t have a phone in their pocket. And that phone booth on top of the mountain even had a dial tone — another thing we had to explain.
This is Gravelly Point – thanks Serdar!

This one made me laugh. In 2017 I biked with a group from San Francisco to Santa Fe, NM. Somewhere on top of one of the mountain passes we encountered a full booth payphone at a rest stop. The 20-something riders with us had no idea what it was and we had to explain “calling collect” and other outdated things we did to let our parents know to come pick us up, etc. It was absolutely hilarious to observe their disbelief. And — the payphone actually had a dial tone! We had to explain that too.
Gravelly Point – thanks Serdar!

ParticipantI was crossing my fingers while planning this ride today, hoping we’d stay off Rt. 7 and not knowing what might be running along the fence there. It was a lovely surprise to find this wormhole! It takes one from the neighborhood to the shopping center via a paved (tree root bumps) path.

ParticipantWakan by Richard Lew
2007 | Indiana limestone, copper, and bronze

Wakan is a two-ton, ten-foot tall sculpture representing the Lakota Sioux Indians from North and South Dakotas. The word “Wakan” is a Lakota Sioux word meaning “of the Great Spirit” and symbolizes the strength and tenacity of the Sioux people. After years of studying on the Lakota Sioux reservation, Native-American artist Richard Lew created this modern abstracted totem as a culmination of twenty years of exploration, experimentation, and continuous work on his beloved heritage. Additionally, the Indiana limestone used for the sculpture comes from the same limestone quarry used for the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, linking Reston with the nation’s capital.
