Sorry for the extemporaneous post – this isn’t an actual submission – but did anyone check this out? It seems to be “closed”. Is it a tree or what??

It says, “Apollo14 Moon Tree, temporarily closed. 10100 Laureate Way, Bethesda, MD 20814“

A lot of the stuff that was marked “temporarily closed” during the lock down was marked so that people would not congregate. Then apparently someone forgot to ‘open’ them back up on google maps. As for the moon trees, google the info. It’s pretty interesting. There’s one in Hamilton VA too – not far from the W&OD.

At the Chocolate Festival I despaired of finding anything relevant. But on the shelves of the old library of the building where the Taste of Chocolate was held, this gem caught my eye!

    2/3/23: Feed the Birds

Well, I heard, actually, that Mary Poppins’s umbrella flight was grounded today due to the wind. Luckily birds such as this pileated woodpecker are able to find their meal elsewhere.

Nice shot, but I don’t think that’s actually a pileated woodpecker. They really do look like Woody Woodpecker. We used to have them all around and ON our house. Then we got Hardie Board siding. They still occasionally show up at our suet feeder but they’re so big they can’t bend over enough to eat much while they’re hanging on. It’s pretty entertaining.

Maybe rethink the notion of feeding the birds

To quote Mr. Dawes (Dick Van Dyke) in the Mary Poppins movie, “Feed the birds? Poppycock! You know what you get when you feed the birds? FAT BIRDS!” :-)

No Alan A! Riding your bike every day is the requirement! Have fun finding some taco joints while you’re out there!:o

I read it that way too — and just now got back to investigate. I had figured I would pass on the game because we simply don’t have that many places out here to do a taco place each time. But RIDING every day I can do. Back in the game!

District Taco at Riverdale Park Station!

I had the breakfast tacos. These are always so filling. Tried the vegan meat, but they snuck in eggs and cheese. The other one was bacon!77c832a17fa6c548f27023dadef5effb.jpgd36e3b0718ee324f8349ab7532cc3317.jpg

Nefarious or … I listened to a podcast the other day about vegan “cheese and egg” products. Maybe they are secretly test marketing them at District Taco?

    2/3/23 Feed the Birds

With this wind, I looked for Mary Poppins, hoping she would sing one of my favorite childhood songs, “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag.” Alas, no MP. But I found these gorgeous birds painted on a wall of a garage in Bethesda. They are ego-birds, fed by the admiration of all who see them.

My bicycle barely saw its shadow, but enough to know we’re in for 6 more weeks of “freezing” conditions.

LG – I had the same problem with Tapatalk today but it worked going from a laptop – and it often does NOT work that way. Hope that’s helpful.

I saw a woman on the W&OD wearing her helmet that way. At first glance I thought it was a new style of helmet but after she went by (the other direction), the penny dropped.

I am officially withdrawing from this contest. After three deflations in the past year (including one during Freezing Saddles), I just bought tire inserts. If I manage to deflate yet again, I figure I should get honorable mention for most extreme unsuccessful efforts to avoid deflation.

Carol, when I was in El Paso last September, I had 11 flats in 2 weeks — WITH tire liners and gatorskins. The goathead thorns are evil and ubiquitous. I finally got the kind of tubes for there that have sealant (but not tubeless). So far … so good. The last day I was riding there in November, I finished my ride and was putting things away. The tires were firm but I heard a little hissing. (Snakes are a thing there so I paid attention). There was a tiny bubble of slime on one of my tires. I put my finger on it for a few minutes and voila – good seal. But it reminded me that even with good tires, liners, and slime, I need to always carry backup when I’m there! Yikes!

Okay First Timers – this is the type of weather that challenges one’s convictions. Don’t give in! Ride every day from 1 Feb to the end of FS (midnight Mar 19) and you might win the prize! And, you will most CERTAINLY help your team!

    1/31/2023 National Backward Day

These artistic bike racks are a work that the artist called, “Duck, Duck, Goose” based on the children’s game. When the maintenance guys went to install them, they saw this as a mama duck and two ducklings. So, they installed it backwards, “Goose, Duck, Duck.” (I was on the committee that was involved with getting these for Reston. No amount of argument or pleading has worked to get them to reinstall it correctly)
