I’ve had cars honk at me, pass me by crossing the double yellow like in this video and yell at me, and I’ll be going the speed limit. It happened to me last Friday on M street. I just laugh at these idiots because they always get stuck in traffic and I end up passing them again. It’s kind of amazing how many morons there are in the world.

I can relate to missing a day riding. It’s a huge stress reliever and when I don’t ride it really sucks. It’s partly why I’ll ride in rain and snow…

This is probably where you saw that photo.

After contemplating it for a few months, and reading a lot of the back and forth on this forum I finally decided to purchase an e-bike (specifically a Stromer ST1) and become a full-time cycling commuter. 2 days in and it has been absolutely amazing. I’m shaving about an hour total off my regular round trip commute by metrobus, and I’m arriving non-sweaty at work (which is key due to lack of shower access).

I am riding on the trails (Custis) and I know some take issue with this. However, based on my admittedly limited sample of the past two days I’m really just about average for speed on the trail. I would say I was passed about as many times as I passed others. I know if I was on my Jamis road bike I’d be much quicker, albeit much sweatier.

As dasgeh also pointed out, I’ve also noticed that the incentive to run stop signs/lights, or make less-than-safe passes is totally gone. And I have way more confidence on the road as well since I know I can accelerate and keep up with traffic flow much better.

Anyway, if you see me out there please say hi. I might even let you try out the Stromer for a quick test spin ;)

Cool! You now have the “e-bike grin”! Don’t worry about what others think about cheating, as long as you are traveling at a safe speed there should be no issue. I’ve been commuting on the custis for a couple of years now and have had no problems. I’m the guy wearing long pants when it’s 100 degrees. I’ll definitely say hi if I see you!

No, I still don’t get why they need Dirt.

Construction is coming along nicely I see. The sign doesn’t make sense to me, though. Can anyone on this forum explain what it means?

    Dear ELITE cyclist:

Just because you CAN pass, doesn’t mean you SHOULD pass.

I hear ya on this. I begrudgingly wave to cars that stop along the W&OD in falls church, but I know most people in the cars are annoyed that I “make” them slow down.

Gotcha. I used to do that on my 1×9 mtb. It would rub on the extremities (smallest two cogs and largest cog, IIRC), though, so I switched to the n-gear jump stop (http://www.amazon.com/N-Gear-Jump-Chain-Guide-Watcher/dp/B004YJ2ZSI) which sounds equivalent to what you already have.

I have the Paul chain keeper.

It works, but I’d rather make it simpler by using bash guards.

It is [sadly] often cheaper to replace the whole thing anyway, though (as opposed to buying two new rings). E.g. http://www.jensonusa.com/Shimano-CX50-Cyclocross-Crankset (those are my commuter/cross cranks; love ’em)

I only need one ring. When I do replace it (probably soon) I’m going try using a bash guard “sandwich”. Right now I’m using a chain keeper that’s attached to the seat tube. It’s kind of ugly but it’s been working.

My chain also hangs off the chainrings like this (even when it was new in the fall) and the rings are the kind that are permanently attached to the cranks. I’m assuming my only option if full crank replacement.

Yeah, I was going to try drilling out those stupid rivets. I don’t understand why it was built like this! I guess maybe it was cheaper to put together. I don’t see any reason why I should have to replace the cranks.

Yep, I always get a numb hand once in a while. I could never figure it out so I just ride with no hands or take all pressure off of the hand as soon as I feel it starting.
