Haines point is closed. The east side has a barrier up, but the west side does not.

WABA also thinks many bike trails may be closed tomorrow; see below. How do they close the bike trails?

WABA has learned that if the federal government shuts down tomorrow, the National Park Service intends to close many of its properties, including regional trails, to the public. We have been provided very little detail, but we have seen preparations for closure on the Capital Crescent Trail. All or part of the heavily-commuted Rock Creek Trail, Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, and George Washington Memorial Trail are on NPS property. While we cannot provide additional information on the impacts to these trails because NPS has not been in contact with us, please be prepared for the possiblity of closures in the event of a federal government shutdown.

I’ve been riding the trails in VA and DC for twenty years and have had only two encounters that threatened me: one about a mile east of RT 28 of the W&OD (a group of about ten boys blocked the trail as I approached) and the other at Smiths Switch Station. Both occurred on weekdays in the early afternoon.

Thanks for the info about Eugene. I have been passing him for years. I’ll be sure to say hello.

Dickie: I was deep in thought when I rode by you, a rarity for me. You relieved me of that burden when you said hello. Thanks for the info about JJ. I see him almost everyday but never stopped to talk.

Nice to see you too. Sorry I did not see you until I was halfway across the road; otherwise, I would have stopped to talk. Who is Crazy Ivana?

Two questions: How long do you think the 4MRT will be closed when the bridge is demolished? What is the best detour from the 4MRT to the MVT?

Rode the connector this evening–very smooth. Much better than the connector I usually take from Owaissa.

Dickie: Glad to know it was you. Yes: I have had to put on a lot of sunblock lately because of an allergic reaction I had to some unknown substance. I usually leave home in Vienna at about 6:40; I’m 1-1/2 miles from Gallows. I take the W&OD to 4MRT to the MVT. Would like to stop and talk sometime.

Did I pass you on the 4MRT heading west at about 8AM?

The drainage was bad on that trail. It looks like the main point of the construction was to fix that. I am not sure they are going to pave it.

    New construction along the W&OD.
