ParticipantI don’t like subforums (like Maintenance) that you can’t see unless you go into the parent forum. Unless you notice that the “Maintenance” icon is darker blue, you wouldn’t know that there are new posts there.

ParticipantI’m glad you mentioned the new route. I hadn’t realized. I wasn’t planning to do it this year, but now I have to do it

You want to go up Vesuvius (Route 56), not down it.

ParticipantWhenever I ride out west, what happens to me is the hydration problem, as already mentioned. I tend to get cracked and dry lips. Also I get sunburned, especially on the back of my neck. I always think I’m as brown as I can be, and never burn even if I’m out in direct sunlight for hours when I’m out here. Out west (Idaho specifically) I always catch a nasty sunburn. I don’t know if the angle of the sun, or the thinner atmosphere, but it always gets me.

My wife and I lived in Lex for three years (and my mother grew up there). Lex Coffee Roasters is great for your coffee needs, and Washington St. Purveyor is good for your beer needs. I wasn’t a cyclist there, so I don’t know about the LBS…
I can’t wait for the sale to finalize (and to retire so I can move there full-time). Hard to believe but I don’t drink either coffee or beer. I’m so ashamed.
There is insanely great riding in that area. Here are two rides I did last weekend (100 and 83 miles respectively). They barely made a dent:

ParticipantMy newest bike-related purchase is a house. In Lexington, VA. It comes with some amazing roads for cycling.

When the light turned green, she turned into the cycle track, completely blocking it, while waiting for the heavy pedestrian traffic to clear.
Heavy pedestrians make the worst kind of traffic.

ParticipantBought me a Garmin Virb camera onsale at REI. Look forward to collecting tons of boring bike videos that I never get around to editing down to something watchable.
The plan is to capture some stuff to make riding the trainer next winter a little less like a torture session.

ParticipantThe route in your link is private!
I’m out of town, but it sounds like a lot of fun. My longest ride this year is 109 miles.
Keep safe.

ParticipantWhat a great story. Kudos!

ParticipantI’ve never left the trail before Leesburg when heading west. I’ve driven some of those roads in a car (Belmont Rd, etc.) The whole area seems like subdivision hell to me.
I’d love some good suggestions for this area also.

ParticipantWas that thing printed on a PLOTTER?

ParticipantI’m a fair-weather commuter during the year. Wouldn’t it be hypocritical of me to make a point of riding in the rain when I wouldn’t do it any other day?
That’s my story anyway. Doubtful I will ride in. But I can see the local Tysons stop from my office window. I’ll wave at ya.
