ParticipantHains Point actually did have some snow and ice on the road, especially on the north-bound side. The worst road hazard was the goose crap. I’ve never seen it so bad.
The gate was closed however, so I had to cyclo-cross it a bit to get around it. I wonder what the criteria are for keeping the gate closed?

ParticipantCool! Maybe I’ll see you on the road. Haven’t decided whether to take a hotel or just drive down and back the same day. I’m an early riser as you can see by my post time

ParticipantI assume Hains Point is OK? Probably going to go down and do loopy-loops tonight.

Last year the century route only went through Hamilton once (instead of three times) and was more of a big loop west from Leesburg with the out and back from Reston mostly on the W&OD. I don’t know what they plan for 2014.
Maybe I’ll give it another shot then
It does have a sentimental appeal for me. It was my first organized century, and I think only my second one overall.

ParticipantI stopped doing the Reston Century after they changed to having everything circle back to the one and only rest stop in Hamilton. The very first time I rode it, it was a nice true loop (except for the out and back on the W&OD which sucks.) The new format is, I’m sure, easier for them to organize, having just the one mega rest stop place, but it’s not great for the riders. And believe me, I don’t think the people who live in Hamilton are very happy about it, based on the number of honks and other angry interactions I’ve gotten there.

Arlington loop combined with the W&OD is just about a perfect 100 miles and a pretty common first century around here.
Recommended. This was my very first century ever. Safe. Not too hilly. Lots of places to stop. Easy to bail and turn around early if necessary on the W&OD section.
In the winter time, a good option is to start someplace like Sandburg Rd. near Gallows. Bundle up and do the Arlington Loop first, and back to the car where you can warm up and change to lighter clothes if appropriate.
(This assumes you don’t have a moral objection to driving your car to the ride start
)
