The counterpoint to this is the homebrew e-bikes that sometimes are encountered on MUPs around here. I’ve seen a couple that must have been doing 30mph. I commute every day on an e-bike and consider 30mph unsafe for any vehicle on a MUP, motorized or not.

Agree…although i’ve only encountered that once..and it was a scooter not a bike. But def. see the counterpoint.

I’m rather annoyed by the stubbornness of so many people to educate themselves about ebikes…. If folks would simply take the time to test ride one at any of the many local shops that sell them then they’ll immediately see that ebikes aren’t the big scary monsters they’re made out to be.

I routinely travel faster on my regular road bikes than I do on my pedal assist ebike. The ebike simply allows me to get up the hills from DC back home to Arlington with the child trailer in tow in a more reasonable time period. (25min. vs. 1hr)

hopefully this gets more traction and Arlington come to their senses. It’s a huge slap in the face for them to constantly promote the “Car Free Diet” only to then restrict the diet arbitrarily.

Post dentist I decided to try the Ft. Myer cut-through from S. Arlington to Rosslyn. Ran into a friend who bikes through frequently and guided me into the left line at the 2nd St. entrance (I wouldn’t have known). They looked at our IDs and let us through. I have a Federal one, but he just has a driver’s license. No hassles.

Good to hear! I’d given up and I’ve been taking Columbia Pike to Pentagon trail….it’s the most horrible route into the city BTW…. I may try Ft. Myer again next week I guess. I won’t risk it during the rain this week though, nothing worse than having to turn back and re-route in the rain.

I’ve been using my Federal ID as well. Yesterday I was fumbling around with gloves on and when I pulled out my ID my driver’s license was stuck to it on top. He saw that somehow and refused to even look at my Federal badge…..went into the booth, talked to some people, then came out and handed my license back to me and gave me the line about no longer permitting entry. Typically I’m going through there no later than 5:45am….I was running late yesterday so it was closer to 6am….

I may try again tomorrow and make sure to only have my Federal badge out. I’m beginning to suspect that there’s just no rhyme or reason to any of this and it’s going to be a crap shoot from here on out. Good to know at least there’s a chance though.

Today, I was turned away and denied base entry. First time ever. According to the soldier that took my ID, they are no longer permitting entry to anyone that doesn’t have official business on base. According to him, the policy went into effect last week. Not sure how true that is because I only rode into work one day last week (the rainy one). Guess my commute has officially been extended by 15min and 8 degraded factors of safety now.

Hey buddy….you…the one on the mountain bike…wearing a white T-Shirt & Shorts….the one that decided to pass me unannounced on the 14th St bridge this morning around 6:15am…do you remember?….I was the one on the black road bike with two black Ortlieb’s on the back, and a bright blinky red light on the rear….
I just want to say thanks!
Thanks for not bothering to announce your pass on one of the narrowest crossings on the trail…
Thanks for proceeding to get 50 yards in front of me and then slowing down your pace….guess you spent all your energy on that pass…
Thanks for proceeding to slow your pace even more and decide to test the bounciness of your tires as you exited the bridge on the down slope towards the memorial….you know…right at the optimal down-hill swift coasting point…..
Thanks for slowing to the point that I was practically on your heels by the time we proceeded onto the sidewalk to go around the memorial….
Hope you don’t mind that I grew bored & annoyed of your antics and decided to pass you in the same fashion that you passed me……..of course, I was capable of maintaining a sensible pace after passing.
