Saw an ebike yesterday that had only one front chain ring. It couldn’t have been more than 2″ in diameter; (maybe 12 teeth?). Rings on the back cassette were huge in comparison; like pie plates. I can’t conceive how the cyclist adds any power to the ebike in that set up. What am I missing?

Yep, that was it. And from the website it even provides power assist to push the bike. That’s a sort of feature, I guess. I should just start thinking of them as the quietest motorcycle on the road. At least there’s that.

https://www.bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2018/06/19/us-proposes-25-tariff-china-made-e-bikes
Chinese-made e-bikes, which include bikes sold by Trek, Giant, Raleigh Electric, Pedego and other brands, would be subject to a 25 percent tariff under a proposal released Friday. The tariff, which could take effect in a matter of months, would increase the retail price of the bikes by hundreds of dollars, perhaps enough to make them uncompetitive with e-bikes made elsewhere, and dampening interest in one of the bike industry’s most promising sectors. Also, GPSs are on the list. Luckily, not Garmin. But if you plan to get a Stages Cycling and Wahoo Fitness GPS, get it now.

So, you’re saying there are pluses and minuses to every policy?

Whoa. Though I guess it’s good news for the Germans and Swiss?
And how did Giant and the other listed companies get the better deal?
BTW, law enforcement increasingly use e-bikes. I wonder if there are law enforcement related groups that would want to weigh in on getting these tarriffs removed from the proposal.

Hate bringing together my real life of cycling with my fake life of work, but:
The EU producers are: Accell Group (Heerenveen, the Netherlands); Eurosport DHS SA (Deva, Romania), and their related company Prophete GmbH & Co. KG (Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany); Derby Cycle Holding GmbH (Cloppenburg, Germany); and Koninklijke Gazelle NV (Dieren, The Netherlands). So the benefiting companies are German, Romanian and Dutch, though I understand that they have production facilities in other EU countries so their workers in those countries also benefit. Switzerland is not part of the EU, so no additional duty on Chinese e-bike imports into Switzerland, though Swiss producers won’t have to compete in the EU as much against Chinese imports there. The duty is calculated based on the difference in price between Chinese e-bikes sold in China versus the price sold in the EU. To the extent that the EU price is lower, the duty is supposed to offset the difference. Giant got a lesser duty because it showed that it dumped less. The EU trade defense law (like the US trade remedies law and similar laws in other countries) generally doesn’t provide for reducing or eliminating an antidumping duty because the imported product is used by law enforcement or other social policy considerations.

I hate you bringing together your real life of cycling with your fake life of work, too. You should be restricted to bringing together your real lives of bikes and beer.
November 29, 2018 at 2:45 pm #1091688huskerdontParticipantArlington DES took a tongue-in-cheek shot at Mr. William Shatner regarding use of eBikes on Arlington County trails, and he responded with the typical reserve that we all associate with his name.

November 29, 2018 at 2:48 pm #1091689DeweyParticipantShatner speaks! In reply to Arlington DES tweet mentioning the County’s ebike trail prohibition: “How barbaric” …tweeted the legendary actor, musician, and rumored investor in America’s largest ebike franchise.
November 29, 2018 at 2:53 pm #1091690DeweyParticipantComment on Shatner’s rumored investment in America’s largest ebike franchise …”he has a new enterprise”.
In the ArlNow comments Arlington DES disinvited ebike riders (and scooters) from participating in the opening this Friday of the Washington Blvd trail. That’s just rude as there is no way residents are not going to use a new safe bike route alongside a busy arterial north-south road, and the County now funds ebikeshare through CaBi Plus.
November 29, 2018 at 3:41 pm #1091693jamilkbParticipanthopefully this gets more traction and Arlington come to their senses. It’s a huge slap in the face for them to constantly promote the “Car Free Diet” only to then restrict the diet arbitrarily.
