We have a traffic circle on a bike path!

    Is this new design practice?

I’ve seen it in Massachusetts (Cape Cod) where two trails merge, but not locally.

I doubt it was the MJ; more likely the press-fit bottom bracket on that Trek.

That’s a beautiful bike/color. It’s rare that “surprise me” works out so well.

The guy in Roanoke who built my custom steel bike actually shipped the frame to Colorado for painting because he was not happy with local results. We weren’t happy with the results from Colorado either. Paint flakes off way too easily, and I ran out of one touch-up bottle within a couple of years. I had no idea that properly painting a bike frame would be so challenging.

Even the best trails in the region have issues. Take the W&OD near route 9, where at the best of times it’s ridiculously narrow, squeezed in, with bad sight lines, and now has weeds covering literally one entire lane on a blind turn. If only we could find a little money to improve the trail. Completely unrelated: the new roundabouts & such were part of a $28 million project to add a lane to route 7 for about 2 miles. That’s about the same as NVRPA’s annual budget, which mostly goes into the water parks, etc.; the W&OD’s share averages about $1M/year operating & capital. Ironically the W&OD actually makes about $750k/year from utility easements and similar sources and pays for itself more than any non-toll-road in the region.

Tangentially related perhaps, but I’ve found a really nice alternative to the W&OD through there up to the point where the trail runs along Route 9 near the traffic circle. I’m sure some others know it, but if not: eastbound on the trail at Hamilton, right on 704 to the immediate left on Irene Road/706. Right on Meadowlark, then right on Simpson. Those two parallel Route 7 all the way to 9. I’ve done this a bunch of times and rarely encounter more than a car or two. I’ve also only ever seen one other cyclist, so let’s keep this to ourselves. /s

Early mornings seem to be when folk go out thinking it’s cooler, but I find the humidity in the morning worse so go out later in the day (confession that I love hot weather, so YMMV). Bonus is fewer people about, although I’m still mostly riding the roads instead of trails. Drivers are definitely getting worse. Hardly a ride goes by without an unsafe pass or a buzzing.

As far as riding and staying motivated, I’ve ridden just as much as when commuting. I knew that OCD would come in handy some day.

Roosevelt bridge side path is getting narrower, eek! The short straight before/after the path curves down to Roosevelt Island is currently half blocked by encroaching tree/poison ivy/kudzu/greenery. To whom should I report the problem and ask to chop back the vegetation, DDOT? NPS?

I did this through 311 last year (I think; maybe the year before?) when one of the trees kind of fell over the path, leaving a tunnel with poison ivy at the end. They came out and cleared it eventually.

I have blown tubes like that when the bead was too far out, but not when it was too far in. My heart stopped racing, eventually, though the ringing in the ears will never cease.

Doggo already hates the hissing sound that happens whenever I let air out of a tube or pump one up.

Another aspect of this story is that a Twitter vigilante mob went after the wrong guy, after erroneously identifying him from a Strava ride. The cops added to this fiasco by initially posting the wrong date for the incident.

I’m not sure if Twitter is the cause of everything wrong with the world or is merely a symptom of it, but it is surely one of the two.

Tons more cyclists on the roads, including lots of kids and families, but he’s right about the vehicle speeds. Other bad motorist behavior (passing too close, horn blowing, not yielding the right-of-way) seems at about the same level, even with lighter car traffic.

The plus is you get to try that wavecell thing. I was tempted, but I had just recently purchased a MIPS helmet, and also, I think the wave cell would get in the way of the straps I use for the light in the winter, so it would just be a summer helmet, and yes, it does seem like it might be hot. I’d be interested to see an update on it after the warm weather finally arrives.

I’ve been pulling off the trail lately when I get a drafter. Bonus was extra distance during Freezing Saddles.

My point is it HASN’T been competitive. Has there been a lead change since the first week of the teams being full? I don’t think there has.

Wintry Mix(t)es caught them for about 10 minutes once, but then SteveO uploaded all his rides and they pulled away again, so it was a bit of an illusion.

I would not say it’s been a failure. I mean, I don’t really care what scoring system is used, but that team just has a couple of people in it who ride a lot of miles. (Kris and Lynn both have more miles than our top rider, but Lynn has fewer points because of the scoring system.) We have stayed competitive-ish not because we have anyone with quite that many miles, but because most of our team rides every day.

Yeah, drop bars are the right bars for that bike. I can’t see why a shorter stem wouldn’t work, but if that’s true, the angled seat post might be enough to get you forward an inch or so.
