Yup, thankfully by then the fenders/mud guards should be on my new bike by then.

I corrected my long post above to reflect that you earn 10 points for a one mile day – not 20. Still, riding every day that you can makes a big difference for your team – especially over time.

Alright! Say, K, could you confirm the kickoff is Jan 2nd ~6pm? at Capital City in Shirlington?

Why lie, sometimes I find it amusing when someone passes me on the straightaway and then I pass them on the proceeding uphill stretch. I can almost hear them huffing and puffing to be first to something and growing frustrated that I climbed faster than them on my crappy bike :). It’s like a reverse Cat 6 mentality. The funny part is I think I’m going slowly up those hills.

Sounds like a “Dickie moment” to me.

If you heard the following phrase on the WOD tonight, uttered in a sarcastic tone…

“On my left, I guess! Thanks for the warning!”

that was me and yes, it was directed at you and yes, you are an inconsiderate tw@twaffle. I don’t exactly know what a tw@twaffle is, but you are one.

    I thought it was “Tw@twhistle

I’ve seen some crazy stuff on the trails/streets, and I’m wondering whether any of you try to do any “education” in a constructive manner with other cyclists. … So far I’ve been unable to think of a way to offer anything that would be constructive and well-received. Maybe there isn’t any way to do it. Anyone else have any experience with this?

    Thanks.Liz

    Liz,
I’ve tried yelling warnings, but usually they just sound angry, even if I don’t mean to (well, I am yelling). for ninja runners, going in the same direction, I’ve tried slowing down and, in a conversational voice, saying, “Did you know I had trouble seeing you. It’s a danger to yourself and others. You should consider a light or at least a reflector.” which evokes an occasional, “Oh, thanks,” which I take as a successful contact. I wonder if Tim might let me have a supply of those nifty BikeArlington frog handlebar lights that I could hand out to ninja runners–but I’m not sure they’d actually wear them.

Generally, my experience is that motivation must come from within; from a desire to emulate someone behaving well that they respect, so I figure it’s best to lead by example. Personally the greatest positive influence on me, (to observe traffic laws and show more courtesy) has been this forum, because I respect the conscious (not always easy) efforts others make to do the right thing….and still I have trouble waiting for green lights, etc. (but at least I’m trying) “Thank you, Forum Users.”

Anyone do custis today? I want to go back to my skinny road bad.
Btw, did WOD from Reston to weenie beenie, all good for road. Just a couple spots here and there, not enough to deter.

Custis was squeaky clean from EFC to Spout Run!

That is absolutely hysterical. Although, that was not all fun and games, you did a nice bit of climbing, 2500 for ~30!

Thanks, Jason…Of course I knew there’d be a few climbs. e.g., coming up from Chain Bridge and again Military to Glebe on 26th, but I had no idea I’d be puffing up so many others–I discovered neighborhoods and hills I never knew existed! Dave

Sir, you are the epitome of rule 5 and rule 9! Huzzah!

Did I mention it was about 32F at the time?

Dana, You just reminded me: Saturday after the Cider Ride (~32 F) on Custis, Karen and I going west between Ballston and W&OD, we saw a man in his early 30’s running east wearing NOTHING but a pair of shorts — yes, barefoot too! I was tired and cold. I couldn’t believe my eyes, but Karen saw him, too!

    P.S. remind me…Rule 5? Rule 9?

Thats what would stop me from taking Lee. I don’t like cars that aim for me, and cars in northern VA seem to be drawn to me, especially Prius’. Has anyone taken Wilson instead? I’m considering that as an alternative. I don’t mind a few extra miles for peace of mind. In fact, I might prefer it :)

Wednesday morning from Courthouse to Ballston, Wilson and Fairfax were ice/snow free in the bike lanes

I forgot to mention: I have a neoprene face mask I use anytime the temperature drops below freezing that works really well to keep my nose from getting all snotty and runny. This is the one that I use (I used it this morning with no trouble whatsoever): http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1019429_-1_400093__400093

I use one of these for mountaineering, and I’ve tried using it to keep warm while riding, but it didn’t reduce the snot factor for me! Even worse–it completely redirected (Yikes!) the Fireman’s Blow, so I stopped using it! At least with a neck gaitor, I can pull it down easily before I HONK.

W&OD from E Falls Ch to Shirlington patches of smooth ice and sections of frozen slush deeply grooved with tire tracks and footprints, mostly on bridges and concrete surfaces. Smooth ice not too much a problem if not at a curve or a turn, but frozen slush was bumpy, made for an unstable ride, and caused me and another rider to lose it once or twice. FMR trail between Shirlington and GWT was bad in the underpass below 395 and on around concrete part. Both airport overpasses were trecherous!!! I even slipped walking my bike. Airport to Memorial Bridge didn’t seem bad after a patch of smooth ice near 14th St Br cut off.

All things considered, I opted to avoid the TR wood planking, and cut off at Memorial Br past Iwo Jima up to Courthouse, following Wilson and Fairfax to Ballston to rejoin the Custis near the I-66 ramp to Ballston. All those city streets were fine, but Custis Tr had plenty of spots with frozen slush (I hate that stuff)
