As the winner of the “most miles in a warm climate” (or whatever the official title was) Pointless Prize from last year’s contest, due to a February quasi-vacation to San Diego, I can say that ALL outdoor miles count regardless of climate.
Winter/Warm? Did anyone notice how many of the Festive 500 winners were in equitorial or Southern hemisphere locations?

Another opportunity to distinguish your stupidity. Freezing Rain forecast for tonite!
Dang! Just when I was getting back into skinny wheels and light frame! Now it’s back to the STUDS and heavy frame! — At least there’ll be coffee en-route. See you Java Shack, Bob?

Sorry to nerd your pro tip up, but i had to ride to school today with bacteria and slime mold cultures and didn’t want them to freeze. Yes, i ate the egg.
I’m cat 6 anyway, so what did you expect me to do with this tip?

Today I wore a windblock that doesn’t breath very well. Did a little longer ride today and when I took off the jacket, I had a nice layer of ice on the inside of it. Could have made a slushie. Layers are good, if they are the right layers.
That’s about as as good as Steve E’s photo of his frozen sleeve! (last freezing rain we had)

I’ll second the Custis roots, and bizarro roller coaster – the whole section from the Lee overpass down to Rosslyn has bits n’ pieces that aren’t so nice.
The roots are especially bad heading into town, just beyond the exit for Ballston (Fairfax Dr.)–they redid so much in that area–why not this, the worst? (they did grind down, somewhat, a few, but it wasn’t enough)
Also in desperate need of repair is that totally rough 10 ‘ section on Custis going down to Rosslyn on the left of the yellow bollard, just before crossing N Scott St. It took me down hard about a month ago!

I’d like to see the reflective striping on the FMR and MVT trails re-painted. In many parts the lines have faded to the extent that they are barely visible in the dark, making it more difficult to see turns and follow the trail at night, esp. where there are oncoming headlights.
I agree with you, Arlingtonrider, with one proviso: No striping on all hilly turns (eg corkscrew of death on Custis near Spout Run) use reflective signs or side reflectors rather than stripping because reflective stripes are as slippery as ice when they’re wet (and can cause some nasty spills–believe me I know) Dave

On the 110 trail along Arlington Cemetary, some reflective striping (or just the yellow line down the middle of the trail would be nice. It is hard to see where the path ends and the grass starts.
Hey, Shannon,
I second your nomination for this improvement! Say, are you the guy I chatted with around 7:45 AM on FMR and MVT, Mon or Tues morning from Shirlington to the airport? You had yellow a jacket and foggy goggles, and we talked about Gary the homeless guy?

I want to apologize on behalf of Team 2 for so demoralizing the other teams that only one other could even get above its handicap.
Arghh! You dratted Team Twoers! You’ve got me pulling my hair out, but I toast you and acknowledge some valiant cycling! Only before you get too cocky, remember BAFS has just begun! Who knows what the future will bring? Those Plan Niners (others?) will no doubt surprise us all!
Off to ride now, but first stop is HDCC where I’ll see Chris R and Kathy L and others, too, I hope. Don’t tell Chris, but when he’s in the restroom, I’m letting the air of of his fancy studded tires (and stealing his pump)

Lucky thing Trish N lives in MD. (seen her Strava photo lately?) I think we’re okay based on (ii), however, I intend to do my part by almost never robbing either a bank or a 7-11 while riding my bike on a really cold day. I ask all my fellow riders to join me in setting this good example. Note: if you do feel compelled to do a hold-up, please, for all of us, leave your bike at home. Dave

ProTip: Hard boiled eggs hold heat extremely well.
I made hardboiled eggs this morning before work. When they were done, I carefully wrapped them in a paper towel and put them in my BA drawstring bag.
I had a nice warm lower back during my entire ride, and a warm breakfast when I got to work!
Eggstraordinary! What an eggceptional idea! I’m eagger to try it!

Hey, we’ll get to do it again tomorrow morning. Anyone for coffee at HDCC at Best Buns?
Sure, count me in! I’ll have to get there close to 7, because I have work meetings at 9:30 and I still have to finish my ride!

ParticipantCheck it out…they actually put barbed wire (but only on one side–go figure) I guess to keep anyone from climbing over. Which side would you pick to climb (barbed wire or no barbed wire)?
Answer: climb the 4′ railing and walk around the fence (aren’t the fishermen always on that side?)January 6, 2014 at 10:26 pm in reply to: Tuesday morning could be coldest day in D.C. in 20 years #990281Fast Friendly Guy

May not be an issue as my wife is attempting to pull the “you’re crazy therefore I’m in charge card.” If that occurs, then I will be sadly posting a semi-sleaze ride to ensure Sloppy Seconds gets at least a few points.
Actually, Terpfan, You (and ALL your Sloppy Seconds teammates) would be much happier (and safer) if you decide, right now, to just to stay home or drive to work tomorrow. You need your rest anyway–all those stupid trips and miles you guys have been doing! You deserve a day off, and let me be the first to say, “I care about you guys, and I think you should just take it easy and quit riding so much!”
