I saw them this morning on the W&OD just north of Patrick Henry (drewdane – I think this is considered both W&OD and Custis, at least for plowing purposes). I chuckled. I like that they were for all users and not just cyclists. Hopefully the folks they are aimed at (nighttime users without reflectors/lights), can see them too.

Thank you! It seemed silly that one couldn’t get from Boundary channel drive to the south lot, but the route making pages I was using wouldn’t let me, so I thought perhaps there was some kind of limited access there.

Perhaps it is due to where you are coming from, but does one have to go out to Columbia Pike and Joyce, or is Eads or Fern possible? Or are they insane on a bike due to those metal boxes with people inside looking at their phones?

    I will try it tomorrow.

Clicking the expansion arrow makes that year’s worth of minutes appear for me.

Hmm, that works for me now, but wasn’t at the time I wrote the message. Really. I did try. I still do not get a change to the cursor when hovering over the arrows. Anyway, I can expand them now.

Meeting minutes are available on the BAC web page.

Thank you. I just looked there and I see where they would likely list and link the minutes, including what looks like expansion arrows, but nothing is there that one can click. I checked on Firefox and Chrome (recent but not absolute latest versions) and found the same thing. So, is it “in process” or is something currently broken?

I replied back pointing out that the web page only listed the 6 November closure and asked if there was a way to have those texts appear on the web page like many places post tweets (and to post a sign at the closure about how large a closure it is). I also suggested that they send information to the regional runner, hiker, and cyclist sites. I couldn’t name anything for runners or hikers, but I did mention WABA and this forum. I pointed out that I only knew of the closure because of this forum. If I hear more or see any changes, I will pass it along. Still not sure when I might try the route again.

I got another reply. They are going to take my suggestions into consideration. So, if anyone notices texts or the like on the Rock Creek park page. THey might also try to contact this forum somehow or WABA.

Me: cycling down the Custis just after the bridge to nowhere.

You: cyclist who passes me and then blows his nose off to each side, but mostly back.

Me: Eewww. Couldn’t you have waited until you were much further away? I think you missed me, but that is rude aside from being gross.

I actually got a reply. It was closed that Sunday (and many of them) to remove Ash trees that had been infested by Ash borers (did not want to be in the way of the construction crews the other 6 days of the week). Supposedly the tree work is completed and no more full closures. He pointed me to the web page for updates (which only listed the aforementioned 6 November date) and a way to register for text updates. He commented that it is hard to let everyone know.

I don’t understand the urge people have to argue and defend their actions under any circumstance. This morning I knocked on the window of a SUV parked in the bike lane next to an empty parking spot near the school on Commonwealth, I guess cause they didn’t want to bother fully pulling into the empty parking spot (???).

I was like “You’re blocking a travel lane and causing a hazardous situation, and all you need to do is park in that spot next to you”. He says “I have my hazards on”. And I’m like “Just park against the curb, move your car 4 feet to the right”. He says “I have my hazards on. I’m waiting for her”

Several iterations of this argument later I gave up with a “OK, I’ll report your vehicle to the police, have a GREAT day” and as I mimed getting my phone out of my pocket he drove away, presumably around the block.

If I was in his shoes I would just say “Yeah sorry” and pull my car into the parking space??????

Like my mother, you likely believe everything is your fault, that you are often not correct, and you just do as others tell you. Like my father, the driver KNOWS that he is always right, despite any information to the contrary and he must always explain how it is that he is RIGHT. (I won’t discuss the, um, fun I have when I visit home).

I wrote to rocr_superintendent@nps.gov yesterday after checking to make sure that there wasn’t a notice on the nps page (if there was, I would have written a slightly different note), mostly asking for them to have better signage. Suddenly tossing people, especially Sunday non-regular riders, into the middle of DC isn’t kind. Nice to know that it is open on weekdays for commuters – they are doing something right. They could still have signage on weekends. I would not be surprised if I received no response (I frequently do not receive one from NPS folks; I typically write about issues (trees, poison ivy, dead deer) on the MVT and get no response, but see that whatever it is has been taken care of). If anyone notices better signage, please let us all know. I am now loathe to even attempt the trail until it is done and that would be a shame since it is so lovely.

Obviously those who still have their neon-green bands should continue to use them. If you don’t like them on your pants, because you have fat ankles or something, you can put on your bike as many of us have done. I have about 15 left I think, which I can make available through some ridiculous contest or something.

As Komo has pointed out, there was only a single run of them, ensuring their increasingly greater vintage value in years to come.
I’m in the “overheating” club on the neck warmer; I wouldn’t ever wear it. As an identifier, though, I might tie it on my bike somehow.
The reflective tags idea is good. Matching the neon green color might be a good idea. I’ll see if the supplier of the bands makes those, too.

(It seems that FFX_Hinterland & DrP both earned bands in the ridiculous contest last year, and I never awarded them. I owe you.)

Actually, at the end of the award ceremony and the final happy hour you said that you had them and that we should just pick them up (they were in a marked “envelope,” manila folder, I think). So I picked mine up on my way out.

That is not typical. I am frequently along Arlington Mill Drive around that time and there are always cars in one direction or the other. Or worse (in terms of ability to cause harm, although not that I have ever seen such harm), county vehicles leaving the site. They all head out at once.

Bridges! Flyover bridges along that route making the connection above grade!

Flyover bridge wouldn’t be bad. Just make sure that it doesn’t connect directly to the W&OD start since there are many people who stay on 4MRT to avoid all the crossings (and that useless hill at the start) and that would add crossings to be able to get back over to that very nice and friendly path.

I thought that during the construction in Rock Creek Park, there would be detours for cyclists and peds, but it was largely closed to cars. So, today I decided to do a ride I have done many times, mainly Chain Bridge to C&O (south) to CCT to RCPT. All was good for quite a while (actually, I surprised by the detour in MD on the RCPT access trail from Jones Mill (some street there), but that was like 50ft and well marked). There was a detour shortly after the mill on to the road – very well marked – for a while and then back on the trail to cross to the other side of the creek. Then at the bridge back over the trail under Klingle, the trail was closed and there was no detour signs anywhere. The only option was to get on Klingle. I went east since that was the side the road through the park was on thinking I might spot a way back down. I spotted one, but it was actually blocked when I got down there. I ended wandering the streets of DC keeping the zoo to my right. When I reached Adams Morgan, I gave up looking for access to the park and took 18th until I could go no further and then took N to 21st to Constitution over towards Memorial Bridge. There were cops at every entrance to RCP.

I do plan to write to the Park Superintendent since the lack of route signs was quite surprising given what I heard previously. Traveling from the north, RCPT is basically not open south of Klingle. No idea if one can get further if starting from the south (assuming the cops don’t stop folks on bikes).

Well, at least I could do my part to help Freezing Saddles even if it weren’t by riding a lot.

Just confirming since I didn’t see it listed in the rules in the first post, but it was discussed elsewhere – I believe that one must use a device to record your ride and no manual entries in Strava are allowed. If this is true, then no need for me to register.
