When I was in college, I’d get around on my skateboard. Whenever someone would be driving around campus with their window open and their crappy music blaring at full volume, I always made sure to stick my head in their window and let them know their musical taste sucked.

That was you?… hangs head in shame!

    1) I’m excited to have not been blown up by the gas leak on the W&OD by Falls Church. 😮

Holy crap, I kept wondering if I was going mad and was the only one smelling it, then I thought to myself…. “there is a firehouse right here, it can’t be an undetected gas leak”. WRONG!

Having never suffered a severe knee injury I can’t offer any advice other than to say ask the right folks. You will get lots of great info here, but at the end of the day your physicians and possibly a really qualified bike fitter will probably provide the best advice. Wishing you all the best with the recovery and hope to see you riding again soon.

Gotta say it….. drivers in this area are appalling, actually in most of America. The driving test I took was a joke compared to other countries. Earning the responsibility to drive a 3000 lb. hunk of metal and glass should be far more difficult. In many countries you need to know basic car maintenance and how a car actually works before passing your test. If more people realized the limitation of their vehicles, or what actually makes the car stop and start they would probably drive differently. The other issue I see frequently is poor policing of dangerous behavior. Speeding is policed far more than reckless or dangerous driving. Yes, speeding causes accidents, but so does passing on the right, not using turn signals, turning directly into the far lane, and so on. I never see these infractions policed, in fact I see the police making the same mistakes. Until the driving culture in America changes and the idea of a license becomes a privilege not an expectation nothing will change.

Do you miss the coffee much?

I like a lot of the stuff that Raleigh is doing. Their Single Speed, disc cross bike is really nice. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but a VERY nicely done bike in my eye.

Love that bike, considered it a few times, but being the wimpy gear man that I am I might consider the Roper instead

I can’t wait to roll on those green lanes, sort of like our version of the red carpet….. without the awards, cameras, tuxedos, celebrities, swag, police escorts, and screaming fans…. OK, so nothing like the red carpet!

Because I have a heart condition I wear a HR monitor on occasion just to see if my numbers are generally consistent when I ride. I use it mostly to see when I am peaking and if I can keep my BPM around 150. Prolonged periods of high exertion unfortunately is not good on my heart so I need to have an idea of how hard I am working. However, I have also found that my own internal HR monitor (my brain) is pretty accurate and wearing the Garmin sometimes makes me unnecessarily worried. I pay attention very closely to how I feel, not just what the numbers are saying. A good HR might mask another issue, if you are only paying attention to the numbers you will miss other warning signs….. lets not forget the Jim Fix lesson. At the end of the day if you have any family history, or just feel strange one day (achy hands, palpitations, blurred vision, whatever), get screened, do a stress test, get an echo. The data collected from these tests will give you a far better understanding of how healthy and strong your heart is, and hopefully piece of mind. This is how I found out I had been living for 40 yrs. with a degenerative congenital issue.

*All that to say your numbers look pretty damn good to me!

    It’s back.

After spending the last two weeks organizing and whipping a perpetually disorganized teenager off to college it was a bit of a shock to open up the Derby web page, click on the Gallery of photos, and see myself captioned, Spectacle.

You might be the only one shocked by that. Seriously, that bike, that outfit.. awesome…. you should have been on the splash page. It’s on my calendar and I will certainly be sampling the bourbon sangria!

I’ve been using a Cygolite Miticross for years now and really like it. VERY bright. It does require an onboard battery but it is easy to attach to a stem or bars with the velcro strap. I ordered extra handlebar mounts from their website for very little cost so I can switch between my various rides. They are still a pretty small company out of California so their customer service is actually really good. For the rear I use an arsenal of blinky lights on my back pack and seat bag, as well as a battery operated tail light attached to my seat post. Bicycling magazine just did a great review on headlights a few months ago.

It always freaks me out when these things happen on the same stretches of road I ride on every day. Hope they find out the cause of the accident, but more than anything I hope the cyclist recovers fully.
