ParticipantHoly crap Kel, send her my best wishes for a speedy recovery. Very inspiring to hear she is still in good spirits.. where did this happen?

ParticipantHope you feel better soon, if I remember correctly you were starting to feel bad at the Happy Hour last week…. that’ll teach you for not drinking a pint of the black-stuff with me… I am certain that is what helped Certifried avoid the same plague…. that and his bionic heart!

ParticipantI took my first day off work in 2 months yesterday, sat around eating bad food and watching mind numbing TV… HOLY CRAP…. it was bliss. My morning commute was amazing, legs felt fresh, mind was relaxed, and the weather was just dumb! Now if I can only remember to take a few more days off this year!

ParticipantWho was wearing a BikeArlington jersey this morning on Maple ave in Falls Church around 8:30 heading Northwest around Great Falls Street? To be that stylish you have to be a forum member.

ParticipantCNN did a spot on it yesterday and Bicycling Magazine posted it today so it hit mainstream USA already which is awesome. I really appreciated the calm responses from the riders, wish I could be that composed.

That’s my commute. Merge into the left turn only lane before Kirkwood, but go straight across into the next left turn only lane for Wilson. Make the left turn like a car and take the lane. Keep taking the lane on Wilson because the lane is sub-standard width and cars hug or bounce off the curb tring to turn right on Washington.
This is my commute as well and I do exactly as Brendan does, the only difference is I stay in the regular left lane at the Kirkwood intersection not the left turn lane, I then merge into the left turn lane for Wilson after I pass through kirkwood. This is one of those places where being and acting as regular traffic works to your advantage. Even at rush hour most drivers will let you over especially if you make eye contact and use hand signals/gestures to indicate your intentions.

IF I ride up the right side (which I also don’t do often) I do so at a very slow speed so that I can react quickly if I need to. Lots of times I wait in line with the cars.
Couldn’t agree more. Although it sucks to sit in traffic, I just don’t feel safe passing streams of cars on the right. I feel much safer (and visible) sitting and waiting with everyone else. I also think it encourages motorists to accept cyclists as vehicles.

ParticipantI wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you back on the roads soon.

ParticipantI had all kinds of trouble with my 500 after I did the latest update. I couldn’t do much of anything. I spent a good part of my day trying to figure it out with the help of many different websites. Eventually I found someone that had the older firmware posted so I reverted back. I also noticed that many of my course files had become corrupt. Do a quick check by looking for courses on your Garmin, and then also looking for the same courses on the hard drive once it is mounted on your desktop. If there are any missing or additional files on either, trash those courses. I use a MAC for uploads and I accidentally used parenthesis in a few of my course descriptions… this was a bad idea. Be careful how you name your files, the new updates seem very sensitive about this fact.
Hope that helps.

I usually take it a step further when I’m going west bound and take Van Buren => E Columbia => Little Falls since I pop off the W&OD at Little Falls anyway. I often prefer crossing as road traffic at the E Columbia / 29 light rather than ped traffic at a busier intersection.
Awesome VVill, gonna use this one. I actually go the same way every morning, but have been getting off the trail at Van Buren, and heading up to Westmoreland, just to make a left on Lee and a right on Little Falls… you just saved me that hideously long light at Lee and the temptation to spend money at Tri360! Cheers!

ParticipantI think ronwalf has some excellent suggestions to help narrow down the issue. Knocking is generally easier to solve than creaking, however it can still be a pain in the arse. I am never convinced that speed or pedaling has any effect on a situation as noises can be drowned out by so many other things when you are moving at speed or pedaling hard. I am OCD when it comes to my bike so I regularly find myself inventing new ways to narrow down a noise. When you hear it, try standing out of the saddle while maintaining the same cadence (if possible). Could be a seat issue, or simply a seat bag knocking. Make sure nothing really obvious is occurring such as your heel hitting a pannier or your shoe contacting the crank arm at the bottom of a stroke. Check your headset for play, stand over the bike, apply the front brake and slowly try to push the bike slightly forward, if the headset is loose you will hear a knock. If you are certain it only happens when coasting you can eliminate crank arms, chain rings, and bottom bracket issues, if not, check to see if there is any play in your bottom bracket. If all else fails it most likely is your cassette or hub. The best way to check this is to try a different rear wheel (if you have one) and see if this solves the issue. At least you can narrow it down that way. Hope that helps a little.

ParticipantI too got a chance to ride on one yesterday evening, felt quite luxurious… didn’t taste it though, thanks Pete for being the brave one. Only problem I found was that my Bianchi blended in so well I looked like Wonder Woman riding her invisible plane.
