So has the secret of the monthly happy hours been revealed? That it’s not really a social gathering of area cyclists, but rather, training sessions for the future defense of Washington D.C. (and Arlington) against a British invasion?
Too late.

I can appreciate it from both sides. But as someone who was an avid runner for over 15 years before switching to cycling, one of the things that drew me straight away was the overall support and generosity of the cyclist community. I was out running once and twisted my ankle on the WO&D and was limping back home. Not one other runner even missed a step to ask me if everything was ok. However, I had several cyclists slow to make sure I was alright and ask me if I needed to use their phone or anything. When I first started cycling, I remember feeling like a total noob and being fearful of coming off as a moron to experienced cyclists with my first few flats, mechanical issues and lack of lingo. I certainly appreciate the help and generosity of fellow cyclists that not only offer their help (from air to tubes to tools to expertise), but repeatedly demonstrate that we are a community that really takes care of each other. As much as I may understand and appreciate the alternative perspective, that will not dissuade me from slowing to ask every single time I see a fellow cyclist that may possibly need assistance. Needed or not, to me the offer represents the spirit of the cycling community and outside of the joy of the ride itself, is one of the primary reasons I am proud to call myself a cyclist.
Perfect response!

ParticipantAlso… welcome to the forum and the area No_Falls, hopefully you’ll get used to our sarcasm sooner than later. Stop by the HH tonight if you can, it’s really close to your home so you should be able to beat the rain… that is of course until Dismal shows up. Safe riding, and see you out there.

Jrenaut, maybe you should change YOUR name. Pete, Shawn, Chris, and Steve are the only acceptable male names in the forum. All the ladies must be named Kathy or Liz.

ParticipantUpdate on my buddies bike situation. After waiting three days with the note attached to the bike and the bike remaining locked outside his office… he, errr….. has his bike back. I don’t have all the details but I believe a car jack was involved.

ParticipantWhat is it with weather forecasters? I’ve never known a job where you can be 100% wrong most of the time and stay employed. All day the forecast was saying rain at 7:00. I left at 4:30 for my 20 mile ride home and it started raining immediately….it followed me the entire way. DRENCHED! Of course by 7:00 is was lovely… I need a better app.

ParticipantI just replaced my inner chainring for the same reason….put on new chain to discover the cassette was worn, installed new cassette and chain to find my inner chain ring was worn. Finally got it right, but being Campagnolo I had to sell the rest of the bike to afford it

wtf is “officially registered”? I take it he doesn’t have a receipt?
Yeah, I thought the same thing…. he couldn’t find his receipt at home but he is contacting the bike shop to see if they have any old records. It made me wonder what would happen if this happened to me… bike stolen in a different jurisdiction to where it was registered…. can DC check with Arlco, etc? I told him to at least remove the pedals, seat, etc so it can’t easily be ridden…. it’s so stupid, it’s just sitting outside his office with two locks on it.

ParticipantSince this post went up my good friend Ross had his bike stolen, and in a VERY bizarre twist the thief just happened to ride it and lock it up the next day outside his office. Short story, even though he could identify the bike by serial numbers and pictures the Police would do nothing as the bike was never officially registered…. UGHH… Read his blog!

I rode the 4MRT from Glencarlyn to Shirlington this morning and discovered that the stream crossing at Columbia Pike is again flooded because sand and gravel have again clogged the space under the concrete slab ford. I have sent a message to the Arlington trails email address on the sticky in this subforum. Did anyone else report it? This must be the result of last week’s heavy rain and shouldn’t still be the case almost a week after the event.
It had been like that for nearly a week. Being that I have only just started using this trail over the last month I figured it was a normal occurrence so I didn’t mention it. Looks like your report worked, it was dry and clear as of this morning.
