ParticipantI’m looking forward to seeing everyone there. Thanks so much for organizing this!

ParticipantI’m going to be out of town for about 10 days, so I’ll miss any happy hour between March 4-13. But I do have a bike lined up, so I’ll still get in some miles.

ParticipantThere’s another meeting tonight about the project. Again, I’m astounded about the lack of information about the project on the NPS website and any advanced notice about these public forums. It’s as if they don’t want anyone to know about the project.
WABA sent this out yesterday
Way back in February of 2014, you, along with 2500+ area residents, signed a petition demanding that the National Park Service and District Department of Transportation get in gear to repave, redesign, and just fix the long-crumbling Rock Creek Park Trail. Your response got the project moving. The Final Environmental Assessment was released in June and design work began. The project has been put out for bid and we just might see construction start this spring on some sections of the trail. Read the full story here.
Tomorrow night, DDOT and the National Park Service are hosting a stakeholder meeting to provide an update on the project and get input on the process ahead. If you want to see and hear some details for yourself, we encourage you to attend.

Me: lady rider out for a relaxing ride on Four Mile Run and MVT through Old Town before the rain on a Sunday morning.
You: overweight Caucasian middle aged male squeezed into a bib on a fancy road bike who buzzed me first just past the Shirlington Rd. crossing without calling the pass, then encountered me again northbound on the on-road section of MVT coming up from Old Town, where you proceeded to unleash a slew of profanity on me. I was taking the lane instead of risking the door lane, and slowing for 4 way stops behind a white Suburban, and apparently this was my crime against you that entitled you to calling me a “f’ing a-hole” and what sounded a lot like “f’ing c-word” (But may also have been punk, I was mainly trying not to listen to you). My response: “I’m sorry, I’m not the one screaming at strangers on the trail.” I hope your fragile masculinity keeps you warm at night.
This is the sort of harassment that makes it hard for me to tell my girlfriends that bike commuting is a better way to go than dealing with creeps on the metro. This was unusual, but I get followed pretty frequently (have had one come all the way up to my house, and I was close to calling the cops but my neighbors also helped shoo the guy onwards), and a decent amount of run-of-mill catcalling or “friendliness.” It’s just tiring sometimes, and while I’ve met a LOT of great fellow commuters and gotten help on a couple occasions, it’s also pretty intimidating to encounter stuff like this.
By chance was this rider wearing tights with yellow accents at the bottom? If so, he was unhappy with me as I stopped for the signs on Union Street. He rang his bell as he rode up behind me at the first stop sign and as he sped on by, seemed to be muttering something over his shoulder at me. I just smiled and complemented him on his stopping abilities.

ParticipantThe Rock Creek Park trail from the bridge south of Tilden Street to Porter Street was a mostly a sheet of ice this morning.

I took a trip to Maui for a friend’s 50th birthday party. She got me in touch with one of her friends who works at a local bike store, who provided me with this nice Specialized Tarmac. I got out every day on the long weekend here, but two rides really stuck out in my mind. The first was going north from the hotel, doing part of the very hilly northern coastal road, including the Honokohau Bay Wall (with one short 17% grade section). The other was heading south and exploring the Honokohau Ditch trail, a surprisingly nice bike trail out in the middle of nowhere.

ParticipantI would also like to see the Bicycling layer from the Google Maps page added to the station map.

ParticipantI’m sorry I can’t make either night this week. Tomorrow, I start on a drive out to Colorado, but I’m taking a bike along to make sure I log some miles along the way.

ParticipantI’m looking forward to another fun FS with my fellow team members.
I live in the Dupont Circle area and work up in Silver Spring. I too suffer from those icicle hands, so when it’s below 25°, I can’t do the longer distances. If I don’t cycle the entire way to work, I’ll take a CaBi partway, making sure I don’t have a sleaze day.

That also means two uphill blocks after a few beers
