ParticipantI saw the first electronic sign on the Parkway yesterday stating Beach Drive would be closing on or about September 19.

I’ve never done this, but been tempted. As I catch the uphill slowpoke, I’d love to say, “Why do you slow down so much on the uphills?”
In fact, just yesterday, Mr. Speedy passed me by the two ponds on the Custis (before the 2 sisters). Of course, despite his getting all up out of the saddle on his crabon bike and everything, I had to slow on both sisters. I opted not to pass back, for the same reason as Amalitza, but I did visibly half-wheel him, seated.
Just to be clear, I have nothing against people who take their time going up hills. That’s all good. It’s the ones who pass just before the hills and then immediately block you. Those are the ones I wanna get snarky with.
Occasionally when I’m running in Rock Creek Park, I’ll pass bikers going up some of the short, steep hills. I take extreme pleasure in calling out “Passing left” to those who have buzzed by without calling their passes.

ParticipantYou also join in on one of the Hills of Rock Creek rides to get to know the park better.

ParticipantIn addition to the happy hour at Heavy Seas, there are also happy hours at Lyman’s Tavern (3720 14th St NW) and Piazza Beer Garden (7401 Woodmont Ave, Bethesda, MD).

ParticipantThere’s a pit stop in downtown Silver Spring at the Discovery Building, also.
I’d volunteer to ride along, but I take a most westerly path from Dupont Circle to Silver Spring via Rock Creek Park. However, on BTWD, I’m thinking of taking the Capital Crescent Trail, hitting the Rossyln and Bethesda pit stops on the way.

ParticipantYesterday’s storms meant the Rock Creek trail was flooded in a few places: at Peirce Mill, the underpass at the Klingle Road ramp, and from the Massachusetts Avenue bridge to the cemetery. The route through the zoo was also closed. The closure of Beach Drive north of the West Beach Drive intersection made for a quieter ride through the park.

The other signs that I like are the ones that say “Bicycles Share the Road” which I am pretty sure drivers interpret to be a message to bicyclists that they should get off the road so as to better-share it with the cars.
I would much rather to see the sign “Bicyclists May Use Full Lane” instead of “Share the Road” signs. I think the “Caution: Bicycles on Beach Dr.” signs in Rock Creek Park are even worse.

ParticipantPolice behaving poorly today in two different situations
The first is in Rock Creek Park. For some reason, the hill below Calvert Street in Rock Creek Park has been fenced off. Why they have to block the bike path going up to Calvert Street but keep the Parkway open is beyond me. Is the bike path that much of a security issue? Along the main path were two Park Police cars, left on the trail. They couldn’t take advantage of all that open grassy area…those tires must rest on asphalt, I suppose.

The second was as I was cycling westbound on the V Street NW bike lane this evening, approaching 14th Street. I encountered a police cyclist going eastbound on V Street (a one way street). When I pointed out that he was going the wrong way, he said “But I’m keeping to the side.”
What kind of response is that? If I drive the wrong way down a street, can I use the excuse that I’m keeping to the side to avoid being cited?

ParticipantYesterday was a good day to feel like I was riding the broad side of a barn as I felt my CaBi being pushed around by the wind gusts.

ParticipantThe new hours weren’t supposed to affect the usage along the trail itself, but you’re correct that it has made it much more difficult to access the trail from the Adams Morgan area. At a recent meeting to discuss the rehabilitation of the trail and the bridge just south of the tunnel, there was mention of putting in a connecting trail from Harvard for when the gates are closed and a cross walk to the trail. however, they had no plans to make this a signaled crossing. It doesn’t sound like the zoo will be changing the access hours anytime soon.

Highest Percentage of total rides that are commutes
awarded by data from Strava with rides tagged as ‘commute’put me later in the awards, i probably won’t be there for the beginning of the final HH.
What’s nice about this PP is it will encourage riders to use the Commute tag.
