I’ll be there!
dbehrendParticipantThe driver was sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years of supervised probation for the fatal crash that killed one person and injured six others:
September 18, 2021 at 3:35 am in reply to: WABA Petition for Protected Bike Lanes on 8th NE (MBT) #1114745dbehrendParticipantThank you for posting, Chris. This is another maddening decision by DDOT. I signed the petition.
September 12, 2021 at 6:17 pm in reply to: Poorly ‘designed’ system for discounted annual membership #1114713dbehrendParticipantIt would be helpful if the profile page was more explicit about whether you’re enrolled for automatic renewal and when a special type of membership (e.g., employer-sponsored) is set to expire.
In the past, I have received an email a month before my scheduled automatic payment for my annual membership renewal. The emails are a useful reminder.
It seems like CaBi also could send a nudge/reminder if an employer-sponsored membership is about to end (e.g., your membership expires on x, you have the following options…).
I get the text message confirmations, but prefer the ride history in the app, which is pretty clear about charges.
Do we know that folks who qualify for a discounted or free membership through their local government would actually experience similar issues? I would hope not. I would hope that the local government would be the entity determining eligibility and when to end benefits, not CaBi.

We rode across the new bridge before and after the 50 States ride yesterday. There are three large bollards at either end of the bridge.
It took some effort to reach the open side of the bridge, which on Saturday was the western side. Getting to and from Anacostia Park was challenging. It was cool to ride across the new bridge, but I’ll probably wait until they make more progress on finishing the pedestrian/cyclist access routes. It looks like it’s going to be awesome when it’s finished.
dbehrendParticipantThey post routes here:

They look interesting, seem like they could be useful, especially for winter commuting, and RedShift has some experience bringing bike products to market.
Sharing in case anyone else is interested.

August 31, 2021 at 3:38 pm in reply to: What to do when you see a kid doing something scary #1114650dbehrendParticipantUnless I knew the teen (neighbor, friend’s kid, someone who would recognize me from around the community), I probably would not say anything. And if I knew them, I’d probably wait to talk to them later in a less stressful environment. Based on the context, a stranger (presumably) calling out on the street when the kid’s trying to get to school, I don’t think you’d have much luck imparting the knowledge/information you’d like to get across in a brief exchange.

Self-driving scooters? Sound like the stuff of nightmares for commenters on neighborhood forums everywhere.
dbehrendParticipantI noticed a couple of improvements this weekend in the College Park area.
They regraded/resurfaced/smoothed out the CSX underpass near Lake Artemesia.

They haven’t finished restriping the road, but they seem to have improved the Rhode Island Avenue crossing at Greenbelt Road (you can more easily use the crosswalk to cross and reconnect with the Trolley Trail).

dbehrendParticipantRegistration opened May 1st. The “race” starts June 15, 2021.
I got excited thinking it was an actual ride across Maryland. Regardless, I signed up as motivation to ride more frequently the next several weeks.
dbehrendParticipantIf you can order through a LBS, that would be a great option, especially if US distributors still have any mounts in stock. Cycliq’s been having a lot of supply chain issues due to the pandemic. I ordered a camera through their Black Friday Sale that was supposed to ship in January 2021. That’s been pushed back several times, most recently until May 31st. A lot of accessories they sell through their site have listed anticipated shipping in June 2021.
If you’re open to alternatives, I’ve had a good experience using the universal adaptor that came with the Fly12 and using a GoPro-style thumb screw to attach it to various handlebar mounts. Using the universal adapter and a thumb screw gives you a much wider selection of possible mounts, many of which you can order through your LBS.

My app is now telling me I’m a bike angel but not displaying any available points. Maybe it’s like It’s A Wonderful Life and I need to first earn my angel wings by convincing someone that they want to bike.
I am really digging the transit map with real time bus and train locations.

It looks like folks should see their Bike Angel points in the app within a week or so:

May 3, 2021 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Question about law concerning two cyclists riding abreast #1114267dbehrendParticipantCoincidentally, Cyliq cameras sent a promotional email this weekend that linked to a Bike Law blog post about the successful prosecution of a driver in Maryland that failed to give folks 3 feet when passing (from the video it’s pretty clearly a punish pass, and the summary says the sideview mirror clipped one of the riders):
https://www.bikelaw.com/2021/04/cycliq-video/
https://upride.cc/incident/aggressive-driver-hit-and-run/
Related to the current thread, the incident occurred on October 3, 2020, two days after an amendment to Maryland law went into effect permitting drivers to cross the double yellow to safely pass a bicyclist with all the usual caveats of safe passing – clear sight line, no oncoming traffic, adequate time, etc.
