I would modify Hozn’s reply that you can either create a private segment that represents your whole commute OR you can create a segment that starts, like, a couple blocks from your house and represents your whole commute. Then you will learn, like Guy points out, who lives next door and works in your building. Creepy.
Also creepy: achieve the effect of a MANY MANY hours long track by recording a couple seconds the next day before saving a track, then put you XX-hour track into flyby and see who rode past your house or your office – or anywhere near where you rode for that matter. Casts a pretty wide net.
PS-I’ve only done this unintentionally, but man, you can get a lot of “flybys” when you’re bike is parked at home for 14 hours.

ParticipantThe phrase “deer management” sounds like something from a Far Side cartoon. I’m picturing a board room full of bucks. The CEO is the one with the most points on his rack. There is also, appropriately, some sort of illustration of does running into a glass ceiling.

My grandmother used to say, “it’s nice to be nice.” But I think I’ve got this now: it’s nice to be nice when it’s nice, but it’s nicer not to be nice when it’s not nice, which isn’t the same thing as being not-nice. But if you’re nice when it’s not nice to be nice (i.e. you’re not not-being-nice), someone might be not-nice to you, which may or may not be the same as that person not being nice to you. Yes. No chance I’ll get that wrong. :p

If I see someone obviously dealing with a mechanical issue, I’ll slow down and ask if they have everything they need. I’ve helped several people (mostly in my old commuting-on-the-W&OD days) with minor adjustments or flat tires. If they look like they have everything in hand I generally leave them to it though. I’ve found that most people offer to help when I’ve stopped to deal with something, which I appreciated even when I had it under control. I don’t really mind when people don’t offer though.
I, too, normally slow down and see if I can help in some way unless I’m super late trying to get somewhere. Spring of 2013, the day after I finished the initial build of my current bike, I came across a stranded cyclist near Gravelly Point. I slowed and offered assistance. Her rear derailleur was FUBAR. Still in bike mechanic mode from the night before, I shortened her chain enough to and put it on a middle-ish cog in he back and MacGyver a crude single speed bike by bypassing the RD completely so she could at least make it to work in Pentagon City and get it to a bike shop for more help. I still see her regularly on my commute now and we still say hi/nod/wave/smile as we pass each other. Helping out, when needed or desired, can really help to build community. At least it did in my case. I think it’s always a nice gesture.

Anytime I have had problems shifting between chainrings, the front derailleur needed adjusting.
I second this. You may very well be able to get it back in the middle chainring in the front by shifting the shifter into the 2 position then applying a little more pressure to the shifter lever. Not so much that it clicks to the 3 position for the big chainring, but enough to put some extra tension on the cable and pull the dereailleur cage out a little more, enough to get the chain to move over to the middle chainring. Hope that helps. If it doesn’t and the front derailleur cage is moved over enough to hold the chain on the middle chainring even if it won’t shift it, you could always just pull the chain onto the middle chainring with your hands before you ride it again.
Oh, how I don’t miss finicky front derailleur adjustment. FD friction shifting w/ bar end shifters is heavenly. As long as the limit screws are set properly and I have proper-ish tension on the shifter cable, I can make other “adjustments” by simply moving the shifter lever a little more or a little less…

ParticipantLong live the dynamo hub (and lights)! For this reason among many others. When I had dynamo lighting, I ran it all the time. The drag not even noticeable, but I got positive comments, even in broad daylight, about how visible I was from far away.

ParticipantReminds me of the dog my family had when I was a kid who made a habit of chasing bees around the yard trying to bite them/eat them. Despite being stung in the mouth a on more than a couple occasions, he never seemed to learn. That, or it just hurt so good.

ParticipantOrtlieb sale is on at REI! Classic roller rear panniers for $114!!! It’s taking a lot of restraint on my part not to jump on this. If they had orange ones, I’d probably actually not be holding back, but rather getting myself into trouble…

YOU: Older gentleman walking along the trail southbound with a plastic bag full of litter cleaned up from the trail/roadside near the airport.
Thank you for taking on the task of helping to keep the trail clean. Your efforts are appreciated!

ParticipantNVR, but reminds me of a joke I heard this morning…
How could they be so sure that the skeletal remains recently discovered under a parking lot in England were those of Richard III?
He was found under a two-door.
