(While I realize you were joking,) I also see little sense in applying rule #5 to suffering in the cold.

Of course. Just to be totally clear, I was totally joking. People should wear whatever gloves they need to be comfortable. Anything that allows more people to keep riding longer into the cold weather season is good in my book.

In a pinch, try using aluminum foil if your gloves arenโ€™t warm enough. I wrapped my thumbs in foil virtually every day last winter. Best to use a fresh piece each time. You can put it directly on your fingers or insert a foil layer between your liner and your glove. Works wonders.

Wonder how well this would work between two pairs of socks for the coldest of the cold mornings. Might have to try it out. #FreezingSaddlesTactics

+1 to KLizzotte. Mirrors FTW. I feel blind w/o my Take-a-Look mounted to my glasses. Considering adding this to my handlebars as well.

As for makes/models that make me cringe… big black SUVs, especially those that are some federal or quasi-federal security something or other. I’ve actually had a couple try to reprimand me to taking the lane and even got buzzed just yesterday coming back from lunch here. Cars parked on both sides of the street, me about to turn left to enter my office building, driver floors it to squeeze by on my left side and accelerate up to 35 or 40, just to slam on the brakes at the stop sign at the end of the block. No siren, no lights, no nothing. Just pure assholery and threat to safety of all on the block. Not at all atypical for this type of vehicle around here, thus my response.

Gloves? What are these “gloves” of which you speak?

This morning was the first time since March or April I wore gloves of any kind. I’m either crazy, or stupid, or just generally warm, or a combination thereof.

    BTW, rule #5. ;) JK.

I loved it! Good riding weather has finally arrived.

Given the usual local snow conditions, I need to get some new skis that don’t ice up like my badly scratched up 35 year old ones do.

I think there is some good CC skiing in and around Kyiv if you’re into that. FYI.

Speaking of REI, they just sent out their pre-holiday sales brochure doohickey* today. I leafed through the virtual version, and there are some decent markdowns on some cycling items, including 25% off Ortlieb panniers, fenders, and some other things I’m blanking on already. Sadly, REI doesn’t seem to offer the Ortliebs in orange (not that they’re a high priority at the moment). Anyway, FYI, tout le monde.

    *That’s a technical term.

Looks like another great day to throw up a spinnaker if you’re headed south on the MVT this evening. :D

Ha. I had the opposite problem last night: I come up behind a guy, call my pass, and as I come along side him, he stands up and starts pumping like mad! What the heck? My call ended up going something like this: “on your left…or not…is fine, too…” Really annoying. When I did get past him, he totally chased me and rode my wheel for a while; also annoying. I wasn’t slowing down, either, Dismal. I could tell because I was huffing and panting trying to get away from him. At the next light he made a bold move around me and through oncoming cross traffic; I just let him get way off in the distance. Weird.

He was desperately clinging to his Cat 6 maillot jaune.
