To the gentleman who passed me right by the Falls Church Firehouse on the W&OD this morning saying “Do you smell that?” No, I hadn’t until you mentioned it.
What in the name of god is that smell? Did someone throw some rotten durian out by that playground? Is that where Frank the Marmalade Cat keeps his not-so-fresh kills?
Playground rules: He who smelt it dealt it.
Sure the gentleman didn’t do it?

ParticipantWhat I thought, based on radar, was a break in the rain that would allow me to eschew the more serious rain gear was actually not, so I donned the rain cape and put the rain covers on my panniers under the awning of my apt. building before leaving for work. Despite the rain, and in some ways because of it, it was a nice ride in, save for the near semi-Crazy Ivan situation along the MVT near the at grade crossing of the airport onramp. Fortunately, Ivan wasn’t totally crazy and saw me before completing his maneuver.

Ok guys, so how about a recommendations for a helmet mounted light? No need for a billion lumen or anything silly – I have a nice set of bar mounted front lights, but am interested in something that I could “aim” in the dark on the Custis or the last bit in my very dark neighborhood on the ride home. And preferably not more than $150.
[Not certain whether it makes sense to continue this thread here or the equipment section…]
WAY under your budget, but you might want to consider just getting a cheap Cree LED driven flashlight that runs on AA batteries. You could then mount it to helmet using 2fish lockblock, zip ties, old inner tube, or get creative and come up with something else. If you get one with an easily accessible switch, like a push button switch on the back that you could easily turn on and off when riding as needed. There seems to be a wide selection of said lights on Amazon and eBay for $20 and under.

There’s a new one on the ramp to the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge too (or is this that one?). Do you have that data?
No, there’s one on the ramp up to the 14th St Bridge, too.

ParticipantI had noticed it and kept meaning to mention it here.
I’m glad it’s there and providing data!

ParticipantWABA’s on there, too. Soooo many deserving causes. I’ll need to set up a rotation or something.

That intersection rivals the Intersection of Doom for worst intersection on my commute – except that I can pretty easily avoid it.
It’s one block from my office. In fact, when the leaves have fallen off the trees, I can more or less see it if I turn around in my desk chair and look out the window. IOW, for my commute from here to Alexandria, there’s no real practical way to avoid it that doesn’t add several blocks of riding. On other hand, I don’t have to go through the real IoD in Rosslyn, so that’s a plus.

ParticipantWeather last night was just about perfect. Shorts, long sleeve tee under short sleeve tee and gloves made for near perfect comfort. Nice just to ride again… period. I missed the last couple days prior thanks to evening plans that saw me meeting up with my wife and going home in her car while my bike sat parked securely indoors at work and taking metro to work.
Nice running into arlingtonrider by 15th and Independence and getting to catch up a bit, too.
Saw a rider go down at 17th and Constitution, caught unawares by a rather large section of asphalt at the edge of the crosswalk that had been scraped away creating a lip. He popped right back up, only his ego apparently bruised, as he hopped back on his bike and rode off. The asphalt was already replaced this morning.

There are already way too many WalMarts in DC.
Part of my point, though it’s buried in sarcasm… Or at least implied by the barb directed at Walmart.

ParticipantYeah, I’ve got v-brakes on my drop bar converted MTB, for all intents and purposes a 26″ wheel touring/commuting rig at this point. I monkeyed for weeks trying to get a set of cantilevers set up to provide a semblance of the stopping power I wanted/needed for my big arse. It wasn’t worth the frustration; I gave up. I love my Avid SD-7 v-brakes w/ Tektro long pull drop bar levers, and you’ll only get them by ripping them from the cold clutches of my rigor mortis-stricken hands.

P.S. Uline Arena was the site of the first Beatles concert in the U.S. Probably not relevant to the trail, but maybe some zealous Beatles fans could set up a music-related business near the trail and R St.
I believe it was also a trash transfer station for quite a while, which would make it an ideal site for a WalMart. :p

ParticipantMaybe this will be commonly available and adapted for brakes at some point. Though I think other solutions would be much cheaper and easier, like other gloves, fixies, or rule #5.
From here, and the bulk of the article is about thought-controlled braking in cars.
Shifting Gears With Your Head
It has become commonplace enough that Toyota could back an experiment by a Pennsylvania firm called Deeplocal, which is working on a bicycle that can shift gears based on EEG signals received through the cyclist’s helmet.
“I’m not the best at shifting,” said senior engineer Patrick Miller. “You have to train. I almost had to envision myself using a muscle that I don’t have. But once I got it, it’s not too bad.”
The helmet, said Miller, “is off-the shelf. You could probably get one on Amazon.”

The weather was not all that dissimilar last year when the street encampments and protests forced a change in power in the country. Now that’s a determined group of protesters! #respect
