Signed up and plan on hitting all three Arlington pit stops (only one t-shirt though). :D

This is from Van Buren Street at Mile Post 0 of the 4 Mile Run Trail to the W&OD bridge intersection at the soccer field just west of Sycamore Street (or Mile Post 5 on the W&OD). Still out of service as of 7am Friday, May 7. It looks like the culvert work is done, but only gravel fill so far. Tapes up closing the path.

I did the Kill Bill route today plus riding to and from the EFC Metro gave me a full 100 km. It certainly is challenging and doesn’t repeat too many hills. I’m pooped since it was pretty hot and muggy today. One place was a problem, there was one street sign missing in McLean, otherwise it was pretty easy to follow the cue sheet, but it did make for a slightly slower ride since I had keep checking my directions.

The “Kill Bill” route looks challenging. I regularly ride several portions of it, but not having a Garmin, in several places it’s hard to tell what order you take several of the loops. Tim, how can I get a copy of the cue sheet?

This is actually a fun ride and a good way to see Arlington. I’ve done it the past two years and will do it again this year as long as it’s not cancelled because of rain.

Four Mile Run (the south side of things, through the trees)) also got some fairly recent paving love.

I have especially appreciated the work on these areas of the 4 Mile Run Trail since they are very winding sections and it makes the ride easier with the smoother pavement.

Was chatting at lunch today with a few like-minded Arlington cyclists about the usefulness of short rides that folks just getting into/back into cycling might enjoy. Nothing too ambitious, yet still worth checking out. I liked the idea of a bridge ride, which would stop and check out each of the VA-DC river crossings (starting with Key, down to the 14th St Bridge). I also thought that a Mall in the Moonlight ride might be worth trying at some point in the summer. Any suggestions?

Not really for new cyclists, but in the bridge theme a longish 26 mile one-way ride starting at in VA crossing the Potomac on Chain Bridge, riding down the C&O/CCT to Georgetown, recrossing on the Key Bridge, down the MVT, recrossing on Roosevelt Bridge, past the Kennedy Center along the waterfront past the Lincoln Memorial and over Memorial Bridge to Arlington Cemetary. Then down the MVT to the 14th St (George Mason) Bridge, past the Jefferson Memorial, a lap around Hains Point then recross the 14th St Bridge, down the MVT past Reagan/National, through Alexandria, cross the Wilson Bridge and arrive at National Harbor.

I know there are a couple of groups on Meetup.com that are targeted to riding with kids. Have you looked at them?

The stretch of mud north of Memorial Bridge is still there as of 5pm this evening. There is a narrow dry path that only goes about halfway through. The debris field north of milepost 16 has been cleared.

As of 5pm today the water had receded on the MVT between Roosevelt Island and the 14th St Bridge. Where there was water between the Roosevelt and Memorial Bridges the trail is now covered with soft mud two to three inches deep. Most riders can avoid it by riding near the edge of the GW Parkway. Where there was water just north of the 16 mile post there is a bunch of large debris you can’t ride over. Riders were going along the edge of the GW Parkway, or on wider tires, just off the side of the trail.

AJsinVA’s map looks like it takes you on the 4 Mile Run Trail from Shirlington to Glencarlyn instead of the W&OD. Where Google routes you depends on the way points you put in. It was actually difficult to get it to take me from 4 Mile Run to the W&OD at Shirlington, but I just move a way point and got there. This gives the distance as 15.7 miles with a starting and ending point at the N Lynn St intersection with the Custis Trail. Before the I-395 underpass on 4 Mile Run was completed, the distance was about 16.5 miles.

Climbing S Walter Reed Dr from S 4 Mile Run Dr near Shirlington is 115 feet of elevation gain in 1160 feet of distance. That compares with climbing 203 ft in 1280 feet from Chain Bridge.

Taking Wilson Blvd from N Lynn St to Queen St is a half mile with a good climb at the start, leveling off, then climbing again from Rhodes.

Actually, if you just go wandering around the hills between Military and N Glebe by Marymount, or in the Dominion Hills/Madison Manor neighborhoods you’ll get lots of short, steep hill repeats in.

I used it to check my normal commutes. There were slight variances from what I’ve found works best, but in general, it matches what I already ride. or am aware of.

I rode the W&OD this evening from Shirlington to Vienna. There are still a couple spots with snow patches, but there is a track through that is at least a couple feet wide the entire way. The problem on Saturday and Sunday mornings will probably be where melt off has refrozen and you get black ice, so be careful until it melts off.
