Awesome thread! Thanks for this. I’m going to include it in the Bikes and Gear Link Compendium, if that’s cool with you.

HIT: Any of the Endura Merino wool gear I bought (buff, baselayer, socks). Well, ANY endura gear actually, my cold weather bibs, booties, etc. All amazing gear.

HIT: Vis360 light system, cygolight, and this awesome Serfas tail light

HIT: This forum! There’s absolutely no way I would’ve learned 1/2 the info I now know about cycling, commuting, etc without this forum. The amazing community of people I’ve met is, by far, the most awesome!

MISS: massive Chrome messenger bag. It’s just too big, and my back problems make it useless to me. Great bag! Just not for me.

MISS: Cheap lights. I had several break, stop working, or just completely fly off my bike and explode.

Strava has some reasonably decent privacy controls. You can even set up a privacy zone around your destinations; work, home, etc. For people who don’t wish to join Strava, maybe the captains could enter mileage manually for them? They could create a new piece of equipment and log miles against that under the non-Strava user. Or if someone is that worried about privacy, maybe they shouldn’t be doing the challenge.

I’m not sure that’s realistic for 70 people, 40 regular riders. That’s a lot of people! Can their parking lot handle an additional 70 cars?

Ugh, that’s terrible. I have no info, but definitely hope this all works out. I’m sure someone will be along shortly that knows more than I do (nothing lol)

Where is your employer located? There might be regulations for such facilities, at least bike parking (I believe) in parts of DC. I think I’ve seen such discussions in the past, so this is definitely a good place to get info. Also, maybe reach out to WABA for assistance.

They’re good people, and would know the details. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that they’re holding a fund raiser that’s being matched currently. It’s for their Women & Bicycles program, and I see your username is DrMom and (probably incorrectly) I’m assuming you’re a woman. This is the kind of thing they do, advocating for bicyclist’s rights, which would include the situation you’re in. Please consider donating, though I’m sure that won’t have any bearing on whether they can help you or not. Note: I have absolutely no affiliation with WABA other than being a supporting member.

Here’s a very interesting, and important, article about dehydrating in the cold.

    Be careful out there!

Well, Team 10, not sure what Rod wants to do, but we can use a team I’ve actually had in place for a while

    I Crit My Pants.

I’d have to kick Mr. Alford out until the end of the challenge, but I’d let him back in (if he agrees to slack off during Freezing Saddles)

Ha! Ironically, the Hains Point 100 was “born” the evening of December 3rd so I lost all touch with reality since then…

Rather than cause any statistical upheaval, I can withdraw and just cheer from the sidelines. (Any team that would like me to kick Mark in the knees so it reduces his mileage, I do take bribes…)

OK, this is going to be fun. All I need to do is get a bunch of Edible Arrangements (or, alternately, Wonder Bread) sent to my apartment in Bethesda, and request that it be couriered by Rod. I won’t even need to ride at all!

    I had no idea

I think I like these a bit more than the others, but don’t see them in the Chrome store

Thanks for putting all this together! I was freaking when you mentioned the ice cream, and feeling really guilty that I was bringing the average up (probably for everyone).

(and yes, you’ve got Jason Kyzer on team 8 and team 10)

    go team 8!

oh, to be clear, I didn’t see it posted anywhere, but do “trainer” rides count?

I never knew that Airplane Mode allows for GPS tracking! That’s going to save me a lot of battery life!

I’ve actually got an old verizon droid Incredible that I’ve upgraded to my Droid RAZR MAXX. So, the Incredible will no longer connect to the “network”, but I can still use it for Strava to track my rides, then connect via wi-fi and upload the data. So, even an old phone without service would work.

I was in your same boat for a while. I wanted a Garmin, but wasn’t sure the expense made much sense. Ultimately, one major feature I wanted was turn-by-turn navigation, so I bought the Garmin 800. A week later, Google released bicycle turn-by-turn nav. A few weeks later, I tried to use my Garmin to navigate me to a happy hour. Let’s just say, it wasn’t pretty. A complete failure on Garmin’s part.

In the end, I am glad I have my Garmin, it’s nice and compact and came with 2 mounts. It’s very easy to swap between my bikes, and holds different bike profiles. I have different sensors on my bikes, and the Garmin handles it very well. It is easy to create a route, upload it, then follow it. Of course, there are apps for that. I do have a Droid RAZR MAXX, which has absolutely amazing battery life, and could probably handle even super long rides. So that’s not a factor for me, but with my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus, I’d kill my phone with Strava and no sensors in about 2 hours. I also do like having the comfort of knowing the Garmin is pretty rugged and waterproof. I got a little bit of water on my original Droid RAZR and ended up having to send it back because it screwed something up in the touchscreen. I also know that (knock on wood) if I were to wreck, the Garmin would probably fair better than a phone. Reading GuyContinental’s post about the case protecting it at 30mph fly-off, however, it sounds like the case is pretty good! So, either option is definitely valid, it just depends on which features/pros/cons are most important to you.

I got a bike jersey :) I never get much LOL but I have a variety of children, step children, daughter-in-law, grand daughter, etc, and I got to spend time with them. The “X” was even there, and it was still a pleasant night :D
