    Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

    Tribes (teams):

    • Composed of ~5 riders or less
    • For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
    • Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
    • This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
    • No late sign ups.
    • Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Well, Team 10, not sure what Rod wants to do, but we can use a team I’ve actually had in place for a while

    I Crit My Pants.

I’d have to kick Mr. Alford out until the end of the challenge, but I’d let him back in (if he agrees to slack off during Freezing Saddles)

Works for me. I’ll join now.

Ug. Okay, the sign up form specifically asked that people sign up with their STRAVA User Names so that they could be found. I did not want to collect any additional Personal Information (protecting privacy). The sign up form directed people to go to STRAVA and set up accounts.

It appears people may not have done so, and may not be findable. Captains are going to have to determine the extent of this problem – and then determine what we are going to do about it. Frankly…. I am not entirely sure what to do. I do think we need to give people who signed up enough time to actually show up.

Captains, you wanted to know what your assignment is? Well, here’s your first kerfluffle.

Strava has some reasonably decent privacy controls. You can even set up a privacy zone around your destinations; work, home, etc. For people who don’t wish to join Strava, maybe the captains could enter mileage manually for them? They could create a new piece of equipment and log miles against that under the non-Strava user. Or if someone is that worried about privacy, maybe they shouldn’t be doing the challenge.

My own view (as a non-captain) is that that would put too much burden on the captains. If people want to participate in this, they should at least be willing to enter their own data.

Or if someone is that worried about privacy,

I actually felt somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of publicly posting my comings and goings– I’m reasonably sure I don’t have a stalker or anything, but I’ve had enough slightly sketchy situations in the past that it just *feels* a bit unwise, even if I can’t quite pin down a specific reason for it. So I didn’t use my real name. Strava doesn’t seem to care.

Rides marked “private” should still show up in mileage counts, people just won’t be able to see the details of your ride. This may not eliminate the privacy issue for everyone, but it’s a good option for people with concerns.

Is this where Captains get to make people walk the plank? Because that’s really the only reason I wanted to be a Captain.

Is that what kids are calling it these days? I’m just going to call Team 3 “US Postal”.

I have the teams for all the rest. Please join up with your team!

At some point in the next week, I’ll post a link to the scoreboard. Right now, I’m supposed to be prepping for my PhD proposal and preliminary exam…

Is anyone else finding they’re constantly going to the team list to remember what team they’re on, or find other team members to heckle?? lol

I’m not the Team Captain, I don’t think, but I created a group. We might need to come up with a more fun name than “Team II”, Team two. Twowheels seems to have taken that name already. We’ll think of something…..
