    Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

    Tribes (teams):

    • Composed of ~5 riders or less
    • For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
    • Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
    • This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
    • No late sign ups.
    • Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Thanks for putting all this together! I was freaking when you mentioned the ice cream, and feeling really guilty that I was bringing the average up (probably for everyone).

(and yes, you’ve got Jason Kyzer on team 8 and team 10)

    go team 8!

oh, to be clear, I didn’t see it posted anywhere, but do “trainer” rides count?

It would hardly be a “freezing saddles” challenge if they did… (imagines spooky clowns “riding” a living room recumbent while eating bon bons and watching old recordings of le tour as I have icicles hanging off my nose…)

What are my responsibilities as a captain again?

Steve O is the anti-bollard guy, right?

If so, as team captain, I propose a name change to the Bollard Busters

and an award for the first team to pick a name!

    Calpike, Steve O, Cyndi, ejwillis@yahoo.com?

A word to those who are new here and who don’t know your teammates – a similar challenge many of us participated in last summer showed that this is a great way to make new friends. It might also be a good reason to have some impromptu Freezing Saddles happy hours, weekend rides or other get-togethers during the course of the challenge. All should feel free to announce anything they would like to suggest in that regard, anytime. Many thanks to RCannon100, RonWalf and all of the team captains!

rcannon, this is great. But is Jason Kyzer on two teams?

Anyway, Go Team 2! Looks like great company. We’re gonna have fun!

Merde! Jason may have signed up twice and I did not catch it. Okay, that will throw the numbers. Please look over the list and see if you see anything else obviously deviant like that – and I will run the teams again today. So….. These lists will be revised (probably completely cause I just look at numbers to get the teams to balance out, I dont look at names)

The scoring is based on miles riden and days riden. A “ride” is longer than one mile. After that, all rides count – recreational, commuter, HP100….

Actually, let me re-run this right now – deleting the 2nd Jason…. I will be back to you in an hour. But expect a full shuffle.

instead of ejwillis@yahoo.com you can call me LIZ W. My strava number is 163744.

Okay, rerunning the numbers – everything is probably shuffled – again, my goal is to assemble teams of relatively equal average scores.

What’s the role of the captain. Well, my guess is we need one person to facilitate the game. Handle any data kerfluffles. Clarify things. Otherwise, no one is in charge here. Or, the crowd…. the mob… the bicycle cabal…. is in charge here. What do you think the captain should be? Personally, I dont see the captain as a coach. I see the captain as a backup to STRAVA not working perfectly as we expect – just helping the game work. I also think it would be nifty if each team organizes for a pointless award.

If you want to change the way your name appears, you can do that in STRAVA. The only purpose of this is to throw names down the stairs and mush teams together.

    Okay, does this run work?

OK, this is going to be fun. All I need to do is get a bunch of Edible Arrangements (or, alternately, Wonder Bread) sent to my apartment in Bethesda, and request that it be couriered by Rod. I won’t even need to ride at all!
