The photo above was taken at the 19th & L intersection towards 18th St so maybe at 18th & L there is still a single bollard?

    Will you be camping?

No, we’ve got free lodging two nights (including the night before we start) and hotels the other two. I would have been fine with camping, but for my first big trip I’m OK with less gear and a bed.

You may find yourself getting stronger as you ride. I wouldn’t count on it, but I was surprosed when it happened to me.

That sounds… improbable, but great if it happens. Maybe it’s like Hulk strength except instead of anger as the trigger, it’s Butt’r.

In the lead up, get in some longer rides. Think about doing a century as a confidence builder. Also think about doing shorter back to back rides over a weekend. A 75 mile ride one day, followed by a 50 mile ride the next.

Definitely sounds like a good idea. Any recommendations when I should start to rest before the trip (i.e. go back to shorter rides for a couple days leading up to the trip)?

Strongly suggest a detour into Shaprsburg MD to Nutter’s Ice Cream shop – well worth the climb and the extra miles.

MMmm… Yeah that sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

    1) I don’t think helmets are designed to protect against that.

Agreed, I’d imagine a dump truck would crush a bike helmet into many pieces if it just ran over one directly. They are made to break after all. Maybe the truck was empty and it was a lighter back wheel? Still crazy, but probably a good bit lighter than a front wheel with the engine weight.

Yeah, I know… I was only partially serious (hence my dictated vacation rules). But I am looking forward to his return!

If I remember correctly the guy who works there that came to Friday Coffee Club mentioned they had just gotten or were getting some in.

They do! I went in earlier this week a test rode a Gazelle Cabby and a Larry vs Harry Bullitt (pictured). I really liked the Bullitt. The Gazelle however felt like I was driving a semi-truck.

The number of current cogs on the rear only matters if you have indexed shifters and want to keep them. Since you have a steel frame bike, you may need to stretch the frame a little when putting in a wheel with a wider axle.
If you wanted to use the old wheel, but with a 7 speed freewheel, then you might need a spacer (a wide washer that fits next to the larger freewheel spacer on the axle) but since you are changing wheels, this is a non-issue.
It may be hard to find “good” wheels with freewheels these days.
There is no reason to stick with a freewheel–you can uses wheels with 8 to 10 cog cassettes as well. With more cogs, you will need a narrower chain.
If you want to go to indexed shifting with the newer wheel, you will have to make sure your derailleurs are compatible. If you have a SunTour derailleur, it won’t be.

BTW, I have an 8 cog freewheel I am looking at off-loading on anyone interested.

Thanks for the info, it’s definitely helpful. I’m looking to keep my same shifters, derailleurs, cassette, etc and just replace the wheels because they are old and spokes are beginning to break (they look oxidized). Definitely an old bike so I’m not looking to dump a lot of money into it, I’ll save that for when I get a newer road bike. Just trying to keep it in good working order.

Glad to here it was nothing worse than that!

Something was up with the pedestrian crossing lights there this morning. There was along line waiting to cross coming east and the solid red hand of doom was lit for what seemed an inordinately long time. I cross the onramp going south and had the same thing happen with the pestrian light. Makes me wonder if the timing cycle has been changed to try and give drivers more of a chance to turn right, although that wouldn’t apply to traffic on Lynn St.

When I went through this morning I waited with the red hand while traffic coming from 66 had a green light. Then a red light for 66 and the Lynn Street traffic had a green light. Then the 66 traffic had a green light again with a red hand for peds/bikes. I was a scofflaw and crossed with a safe break in traffic… though I think the 2 cycles or 2 minutes law must apply in that situation.

Ride complete! Longest ride I’ve done to date (51 miles Purcellville to Shirlington and back home) so I’m pretty proud of that. We decided on the Luna Grill/Diner in Shirlington because my wife really likes the Dupont location. Was definitely a fun ride.

OK, I just joined Strava and figured out how to manually upload post ride data from Cyclemeter (history – email export – attach GPX to uploads@strava.com no txt in the email) but does anyone know how to get legacy data into Strava? Manually uploading 400+ rides isn’t going to happen. I like the Cyclemeter app quite a bit better than Strava’s- it sure would be nice if there were a way to link the two.

You can email them to Strava. I did it when switching from Runkeeper to Strava a while back and it worked great. Here are their instructions (from here: http://app.strava.com/upload/select):

To upload multiple files from your computer…

For multiple files, or files larger than 25MB, send an email to upload@strava.com with your file(s) attached. It may take some time to process. Your activities will appear on your My Activity page when they have been uploaded and processed.

99.9999999999997% reliability sounds good…but what about when you forget to change the battery? Cool idea though, especially once they make it a little smaller and less noticeable.
