ParticipantI blew out a rear tube yesterday afternoon due to deteriorated rim tape while heading home on the MBT from a meeting near Union Station. I pulled off the trail onto Randolph Street and there just happened to be a bike shop, “Gearin’Up Bicycles,” so I went in to see if I could use their floor pump, which is a lot easier than my mini-frame pump. They not only said yes, but let me use an empty bike stand in the shop area, too. Turned out that I needed a new rim strip, and a tube, as the stem on my spare was too short to fit my rim profile (as I recently switched out wheelset but forgot to switch out spare tube accordingly in my saddle bag). While there, a gang of 4th grade boys came in, so I recruited two of them to help me and teach them about flats. They were most fascinated by eating my GU packs that fell out of my saddle bag when I got out my tools.
Shout out to Mike the shop manager and Dennis the mechanic for letting me crash their shop to do an emergency repair that got more involved than I originally thought, lending a third hand, and providing a tube and rim strip at a very modest cost. .
Check out http://www.gearinupbicycles.org for providing a wonderful community service for used bikes to DC kids as well as service to DC cyclists in general. I may go back to volunteer in the shop to express my gratitude.

ParticipantI showed up late for MMPC today but found KayakCyndi, ShawnoftheDread, Nimish, Dismal Scientist, and DaveP nursing coffee. There was a drive by sighting of Dirt, and lots of hurtful commentary about his lack of acknowledgement of the MMPC.
I then joined Nimish on his commute w/ Kayak Cindy, after which she and I went onto the Green Lizard Cycling shop for a proper coffee.
While @greenlizardbike, KayakCyndi got a new pair of cycling shades, after which she marveled at what the WOD really looks like in fogless, scratchless lenses.

Massages were in order after 106 miles!
And so was beer to toast SarahB for racking up QOMs for just about every segment Strava had to offer.
And the crew cleaned up quite nicely to have a hearty meal while watching the sun set over the bay

ParticipantColin, Edwin, Felipe, HF, Mike, SarahB and I did the http://www.biketothebeach.org century ride last Friday from DC to Dewey Beach, as the #Blokes-Broads-Bikes-and-Brews cycling team. B2B2015 is an annual ride to raise funds for Autism research and support to afflicted families. My college roommate has two Autistic children which is why I got involved 5 years ago. While at the beach, we stayed over to explore the local breweries and creameries, and took the ferry to/fro Cape Lewes DE and Cape May NJ.
4am start in NoMa under a blue full moon (Boomer, Sarah & Felipe)
Riders were shuttled over the Bay Bridge while our bikes went via moving trucks to the commuter parking lot at Rt 50 – Rt 404 Junction.
We really wanted beer somewhere around the metric century mark but ate watermelon instead!

Why pedal only with Blokes when there are Broads who enjoy pedaling as much, too?

I’m also going to Cinema & Drafthouse from Capitol Hill but 5:30 is probably too early for me. But if I see you, I’ll be happy to direct you.
What time would work for you? I posted an early departure because I was unsure of the route. But if you know it, we leave at a later time, FYI.

There are a bunch of ways to get there. If you go south on MVT to 4MR to Shirlington, you can take a right on Shirlington Road past the Exxon up to the light at Kenmore. Left on Kenmore to right on Walter Reed to Columbia Pike. Drafthouse is on the NW corner. If you’d like a more challenging hill, ride the W&OD to Walter Reed and ride up the monster.
Thank you for the route suggestion. I had enough of monsters on Sunday’s Kill Bill ride, so I’ll go with option 1:-)

ParticipantI rode out to the Green Lizard in Herndon on the WOD trail this morning for coffee and met a pair of self-described old weevils on a classic Santana tandem bike that had a rear drum brake. Their joke of the day was asking us which of them was the lesser of 2 old weevils, LOL
