One of the hills in the Pittsburgh Dirty Dozen ride has a 37% grade.
I’ve ridden it….well, attempted it. Made it ~2/3rds of the way up on my best effort. The grade was actually somewhat manageable, at least from a leg/lung standpoint (and I’m far from in amazing shape), but the cobblestones, and the grass growing in between them, just make it brutal – back wheel spun out several times on each attempt. I just couldn’t find a sweetspot, body-position wise, to have enough traction on the back wheel but also stay forward enough to keep myself balanced .
That said, I look forward to trying it again sometime! It was a hoot to spend an hour or so there with some buddies.

ParticipantWhat a cool ride. Parts of the WOD were like riding through a cloud with all the fog from the snow melt. That was fun.

As of tonight Fair Lakes is mostly 1.5 lanes, occasionally necking down to .9 lanes. People are driving like it’s dry and sunny, so watch your back. There are a number of missing turn lanes so tempers are high, though they had some bobcats out tonight and may have made significant progress by tomorrow. (Note: bobcats in the travel lanes are a whole new source of excitement.) In general all the intersections I’ve seen have been backed up because nobody can see to turn on red, they aren’t properly aligned with the sensors so the light cycles are horrible, and the triple turn lanes are mostly single lanes.
Thanks! We opened at 10 this morning so I missed what rush hour there was and my ride from Falls Church was quite pleasant.
As I went up Grove, I did see the blower out working on the WOD going eastbound and it looked like the leadup to Citizen’s Bridge and the bridge itself had been done. Don’t know if I’ll bother with trying the trail tonight as the detour (Grove>Haycock/Shreve>Gordons>Dale>Pinecastle>Barbour>Idylwood) was very pleasant and very well cleared with mostly good sightlines for drivers at the intersections. (Although damn that hill on Gordons when riding the singlespeed)
The WOD at Sandburg was another story. Snow in both directions as far as I could see:
Westbound:
Eastbound:
With the section through Vienna so easy to skip as well, I don’t think I’m going to bother with the trail until next week.

Am curious if anyone has updates on W&OD in Falls Church and westward. I hear that we should expect it to be partly cleared out to Vienna, which would probably make the trip to Reston doable.
Falls Church: I rode up to the Giant on Broad St today and passed by the Grove Ave intersection. Snow on the trail as far as I could see. Pedestrians have tramped down a bit of a path going eastbound, but it didn’t look rideable except for MAYBE with a fatty.
That said, riding down Broad was great. It’s plowed to about a lane and a half wide, so the right lane has become a de-facto bike lane. I feel confident getting to Fair Lakes tomorrow, should the office be open, taking streets and not bothering with the trail.

This is actually a really ugly part of Sterling full of generic office parks.

Beautiful!
I have a pond right across the street from my office (Fair Lakes area). The sunset/sunrise reflecting off of it makes regularly makes me smile and realize that the asphalt hell I curse so often on the last few miles of my commute (from Falls Church) isn’t really that bad. The FFX County Pkwy trail going through the office’s backyard does the same when I feel like taking the long way to/from work.

ParticipantView from somebody who doesn’t post much:
Even with the superfluous subforums, this site is really not hard to navigate. I’m not participating in FS and I say bring on the extra posts/traffic. I can live with a couple of extra mouseclicks to see what’s new where I have interest if it means more people participating in the forum. There’s no way that’s can be a bad thing, longterm, for cycling in the DC area. It’s really not painful, at least for me, to have to scroll a tiny bit and click on the Commuter or Road & Trail Condition subforums and take a quick glance to see if there’s something new than it is to see those new posts in the sidebar.
If it actually is painful for you, a few seconds of your time is either way more valuable than mine or you’re that much more impatient than me (something my girlfriend would say isn’t really possible). Either way, I hope you can take a breath or two and try to realize that the inconvenience isn’t really all that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. If it is, you probably have bigger things to worry about than a message board.

ParticipantDepending on when in the Spring you’re thinking, make sure that the Big Savage Tunnel is open. If you’re thinking early Spring, it may not be – usually opens mid-April.

ParticipantSecond evening in a row I’ve seen Falls Church PD on the trail. Tonight (~5:15pm), an SUV was parked just east of Citizen’s Bridge. Yesterday ~4pm, a cruiser was parked on the eastern side of the Little Falls intersection.

Thanks and LOL…..no, not hiring. But when we are, I will absolutely post something. I need another cycling buddy when travelling! Sean’s not on the road with me enough.

ParticipantJust Oahu for me this trip. Rented from ITB (Island Triathalon & Bike) – great people and I couldn’t recommend them more highly if you ever decide to rent on a future trip to Oahu.
You nailed the location on both photos (Waialae Beach Park is the name of the one looking towards Koko Head). The one with the cityscape is from Punahou High School.
I did not make it to Hanauma Bay this trip, although I’ve cycled there many times (I go to Oahu for work at least once a year). Just an amazing place….although I find it hard to keep cycling because I just want to swim when I get there.
Next year I’m doing an around-Oahu ride. I’ve been wanting to for the past 2-3 years and haven’t done it yet. The first day there is so perfect for it. Pick up the bike on the night of arrival, do a short spin, then crash early…..up by 3-4am due to non-adjustment to the time change, breakfast….on the bike by 5-5:30.
Jealous of your jaunts over to Kauai and The Big Island. I do enjoy going to Oahu, but I really love the outer islands. My favorites are actually Molokai and Lanai – so peaceful and “Old Hawaii”.
And YES! It’s fun to watch Hawaiians cringe at the idea of 50s….or even low-60s!

Did you see BobCo85 who is grumbling about DC area weather today after two weeks in some tropical paradise.
LOL….no…and the chilly air yesterday morning when I got off the plane felt nice. But I wasn’t quite ready for this morning’s “feels like 22”. I would have gladly traded today’s ride for another long swim!

ParticipantA co-worker and I went out for a couple of spins while on a business trip last Friday/Saturday. Unfortunately, total washout due to some flash flooding on the last day at the end of the trip, but two days on bikes were awfully nice….and some ocean swims more than made up for the lack of bike time on the final afternoon/morning.
