ParticipantHello all!
I’m Brian (‘bmillah’ here) from Silver Spring. This will be my 8th year participating in Freezing Saddles and it’s really the only thing that makes the winter tolerable. 🙂 I’m dedicated to getting all of my days in, but will sometimes sleaze a ride based on family responsibilities.
I like riding and being outside during the winter -mostly because nobody else is. 😉
During the past year, I’ve developed a love for winding paths and secluded trails while exploring connections between neighborhoods, dirt paths, public parks and everything in between.
Sophie, Jefferson and I were on the same team last year. Andrew (Godzilla) and I are neighbor buddies and he was my official riding partner last year (according to Strava Wrap).
There are a couple of long rides I’d be interested in doing this season. One from Silver Spring up to Baltimore and back. The other is to do all four boundary stones in the same day. I’ll plan these in advance and send out info when we have nicer conditions. Maybe we can make it a group effort.
Hoping to meet you all in person, but understand we are all spread out and the likelihood of that is slim. Tho, it wold be cool to take a trip to Belgium over a long weekend and Andy can show some of his favorite routes. hahah.
Oh, finally, I don’t frequent the Forum very much and much prefer Strava for updates. However, if people want to share more here, I’d make an effort to log on more often.
As for the name, I’m agnostic though I did like the sound of ‘Shift Happens.’

ParticipantI think you’re stuck with the title of this post, @alan!
Hello all! My name is Brian Miller, this is the seventh time I’ve done Freezing Saddles and truly the only thing that I enjoy about the winter.
I live the suburban life and have two kids which take up a lot time. I’m in the Silver Spring area (northern Silver Spring, think Colesville and New Hampshire) and generally do pretty short rides in the area. Sometimes those rides happen to be in the middle of the night because it’s truly the most peaceful and best time to ride.
I try to be consistent with my days with an intent of riding least 10 miles each day. I primarily ride road to maximize mileage and time, but my favorite riding is just kinda tooling around on neighborhood roads, cut throughs and some paths on a dinglespeed with fat tires.
Hope to get a chance to meet all of you in person, maybe for a group ride at some point.
Go team

ParticipantOkay, obviously I don’t know what I’m doing with my likes / dislikes and elites, but this place looks pretty cool. Wish it wasn’t so far from my house. Here’s mine

ParticipantI know what Strava art is, but what are Danger Pandas, Wigglebillies? Asking for a friend.

ParticipantOh man, I love this idea. Big thanks to Alan Adams for flagging this for me. Didn’t see in the PP Dropdown.
I’ve got this amazing SS with 650b’s that glide so effortlessly and take on all the small little trails that connect the neighborhoods and have an absolute blast on this bike. Will upload some photos next ride.

ParticipantI’m interested in sponsoring a PP, can you provide more information on how the pointless prizes tracked and the responsibilities for volunteers who wish to sponsor one?
Just want to make sure that what I’m thinking is trackable. Maybe there is someone on the dev team we can run ideas by to make sure it’s realistically accounted for?
Really trying to avoid tallying and updating a spreadsheet of riders before bed each night.

ParticipantI was fortunate enough to have attended in 2018 and 2019 and had a lot of fun.
I anticipate being there again on Friday and hamster-ing HP late into the night.

ParticipantThis looks like good fun. I might be able to do a portion of this, (would meet up with you at Passion). What is the approximate pace of this ride?
bmillah
ParticipantI realize I may be a little late to this party, but wanted to know if you have two left. Very interested in keeping my neck warm during descents

ParticipantMy name is Brian Miller and this is my fourth year doing Freezing Saddles. I live in MoCo just north of Silver Spring with my wife, two daughters and my dog, Juno. All of the aforementioned think I’m nuts for doing this, but have learned to adapt to rides at strange hours in the blistering cold. The kids keep me busy, especially with virtual learning, so a lot of my rides take place at night, early mornings or on the weekends. I really love riding at night, I find it peaceful and enjoy the solitude of open roads and no traffic.
Would anyone participate in a team night ride?
FUN FACT: For COVID, I’m working remotely, but normally work in DC. Last year I used Capital Bikeshare rentals to get in @300 FS miles which included an HP lap.

ParticipantI have no idea who this person is…
Welcome @Dan!

ParticipantDone!
Q: Is it possible to hate winter but love Freezing Saddles?

ParticipantI was super-happy to see the FS21 club pop-up on Strava yesterday, and now even more excited for January 1st, 2021 to arrive.
I really enjoyed the new points system last year, but wouldn’t be disappointed if we slightly lowered the threshold from 10 miles to 7 (or even 5) miles before counting each additional mile as one point. It was incredibly difficult to catch up if you missed a ride.
I thought team sizes were fine but was disappointed when two of our teammates stopped participating after the first week or so. Also, I really enjoyed the Parkfinder last year, would be fun to incorporate something like that again.
Also, it’ll be interesting to see if there are more or fewer willing to play this year. There are far more WFH’ers than commuters for sure, and despite being at home I somehow have less time in my day to get out for a ride.

ParticipantI used to ride by there every night on my way home and think to myself… “I really should drop in for a beer…”

ParticipantI think I’m gonna have to bail on Thursday night. Assuming it’s still on, I don’t think I’d be acting responsibly if I went. Plus I shoot a lot of snot rockets when I ride in 3-mile circles.
Super-bummed but maybe we can do a midnight HP loop party sometime in the heat of the summer when all of this blows over and call it Melted Saddles or something.
