Can somebody map this on google maps for me – I’m struggling to figure out just where this trail is.
I’m working on my route selection from DC to crystal city and the regular MVT–>LBJ grove–>Columbia Isl. Marina Bridge–>Boundary Channel Dr–>Long Bridge Dr–>Crystal City route is fine, but the LBJ grove detour is a bit out of the way and the current state of Long Bridge Dr. is AWFUL (although it looks like it will be repaved within the next few weeks)

When I rode by the TR barrier clusterf%&*ck yesterday (Westbound towards Rosslyn), there was a (temporary?) posted sign with a 15mph speed limit. There was also a tent with NPS officers there. I would have stopped but was late to get home. Anyone else stop?

I didn’t see the sign when I rode by eastbound this morning but I could have just not been paying enough attention.

Is there any legal justification for the sign? Could someone point me to the VA / NPS code that sets the trail speed limit at 15mph?

I know that on the CCT, in MD, the speed is officially codified at 15mph (although not in DC, IIRC). I didn’t realize that VA had implemented the same for the MVT.

    …Now that I’m a VA bike commuter and all…

Curious question: Is it your homeowners insurance that is covering the theft?

You may want to add the Surly Disc Trucker / Long Haul Trucker and Surly Crosscheck to your candidate list. I’ve had my Disc Trucker for just shy of a year now and have gotten a lot of use out of it:
Crystal City Challenge ride and a 24hr Fleche on 700Cx28s
Numerous gravel grinders with Dirt and co. on 700Cx40s
My first 200km brevet on the stock 700Cx32s.

The bike isn’t terribly light, but its pretty nimble and handles bad road conditions well. LOTS of eyelets for mounting racks/fenders/pumps&cages, etc.

My last chain question (for now)

    SRAM 1051, 1071, or 1091?

1051 is available from a couple of sources for about $33
1071 is in the low $50s
1091 is available from Nashbar for $40 (in a shop pack)

I know that the SRAM 900 series chains have issues with the hollow pin version being not as reliable as the solid pin version…not sure if this is the case for the 1000 series, but it may be a question you want to ask.

So, having spent 2 days in my new office building. Part of this massive complex in Crystal City, I have some updates.
There is essentially a single garage that spans the entire footprint under all the buildings. Sections are segregated for cars (with certain areas only accessible by certain entrances) but bikes can get around the entire lot without difficulty.

There are a few inverted U-locks near the garage entrance to the health club and some subpar racks strewn elsewhere around the main garage floor. As far as I can tell, there are no bike cages.

For my office building (and I suspect the others) there are no locker rooms / showers. So I’ll get a (not cheap) membership at the Health club and use that.

I did see a bike stored in the 9th floor office supply / storage room of my building. So today, I wrote a note asking my Fellow Bike Commuter for suggestions on getting the bike upstairs (I’m hoping for in-my-office bike parking) without causing anyone else to get upset. (This is one of those buildings that has a lot of DoD contractors and a lot of Air Force brass, so I dont want to piss anyone off.)

Hopefully I didn’t come across as creepy. I should have invited them to Friday Coffee Club.

Just catching up to the forums after a couple days on the new job.
Was thrilled to see so many BA riders and #bikeDC riders on the roads & trails these past 2 days:

@dailyrandonneur and @gypsybug on Ohio Dr.
    @sharrowsDC in Crystal City
1/8th on the 14th St Bridge yesterday morning (me Crystal City bound)
and dcv on the Key bridge this evening.

If this is what is in store for me on my new commute, I’m gonna love it.

Quick comment to remind myself to pick up this thread again. Won’t be able to do this over weekday as I originally planned, but weekend trip may be in order for July, or August.
Nor sure about timing – originally thought early AM departure from Pittsburgh (because train from DC would get in at about 11PM night before) but afternoon departure might make more sense…

Storm risk downgraded. The thuderstorms that rolled through this morning pulled in some cooler air and calmed things down a bit. But all that sun we’re seeing now is cauing a bit more agitation in the atmosphere, so still plenty of chance of some storms popping up here and there through the afternoon. Ride safe, folks.

I enjoyed the ride – I dont think I rode as strongly as I would have liked, but still it was a good experience.

Dasgeh – sorry I couldn’t stop to chat when I passed you. I think that was on my last lap and I needed to get home to help out with the little one. Nice to be able to say hi and put a face (and bike) to a name!

I think my overall average was 19, although I had 3 couple-of-minute stops to say hi to my wife and daughter who were spectating at the turn-around in Roslyn and then a 5 minute water break at the top of the AFM hill.

I did feel pretty good about my climbing on the AFM and the other hill along 110 back into Crystal City. I’ll need to take a closer look at Strava to see what my moving time and moving avg. speed were.

Kathy, thanks for the cheers and cowbell – it was great to see you!

As for attaching the number w/chip to the front of the bike. Any tips so its not flapping around and/or scooping up all the wind?

No BikeArlington jersey for me – I’ll probably be in a black long sleeve jersey and 3/4 knickers (also black). Rolling on the dark green Surly Disc Trucker. Numero 826

Rode in the rain to get my registration materials….. felt like crap by the time I got home…. hope this summer cold crap is finished before Sunday. Met Nick (4st47lbs) at the hotel, good to see you sir and looking forward to lining up with you on Sunday! Crossed paths with a speeding Cosularrider heading towards the hotel on the MVT to collect his registration materials as well… he looked in good form…. shocker!

Quick question: Anyone know if the helmet sticker needs to be in a specific position… front, back, side? And are they picky about the jersey number orientation?

Wow, at 2:45/3:00, I must have missed all of the forum members going to pick up their packets. Fortunately, no line when I went to get mine.

My plan is to ride down to Crystal City around 630 (to get there around 7AM). Dickie, others, where are you planning on meeting?
