ParticipantTrammel Rd. in the Merrifield-Annandale area had several downed trees and power lines this morning. I expect repairs will take the better part of the day.

ParticipantI got one of these once for a segment on Graham Rd., but now the segment does not show up as eligible.

Participant“The Justice Department plans to condemn nine acres of land adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery to add about 60,000 new graves and a columbarium that could extend the life of the cemetery beyond 2050.”
“Government lawyers filed a civil suit Monday in Alexandria federal court to take the land, which is owned by Arlington County, by eminent domain. In exchange, the Justice Department will realign Columbia Pike, a major highway running through the county, as well as build a new 10-foot-wide bike path, widen sidewalks, install street lighting and plant trees on both sides of the widened Columbia Pike. Overhead power lines will be buried. A portion of Southgate Road will be closed for the realignment.”
No design map in the article, so can’t tell if this will make things better or worse.

I gather the Wednesday coffee club at Best Buns has resumed (outdoors with distancing). Any others? Might be nice to have a master list.
Since few of us are commuting downtown at the moment, I assume FCC is still off.
I’ve been past Best Buns on a couple of recent rides. Best Buns was doing curbside business. All the outdoor furniture was stacked up inside the Carlyle restaurant space. I don’t think HDCC can resume yet.

ParticipantFairfax County put up a temporary bike/ped lane on Tysons Blvd., the main road around the Galleria Mall (Tysons II), to provide extra exercise space during the pandemic. See: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/news/t12_20
I’m not sure how necessary the effort is. Traffic is unbelievably light in the area even during what would normally be morning and evening rush hours.

Fairfax Cross-County Trail riders be advised there is construction on the trail between Tobin Rd./Eakin Park (and maybe further north, I did not go that way) and Woodburn Rd. Looks like new drainage and repaving.
Looks like they are almost done with this project, signs were still up this morning, but I saw no work crews. The new blacktop is nice and smooth. Looks like they are still building up the shoulders with gravel as some of the new pavement has a substantial drop-off on either side.

Should you have a chance to ride the trail, stop, pull off the trail and enjoy the view north.
As well as the improved smellscape.

I have a 1-year old and we just got a Burley Bee double bike trailer. We have made several attempts at using it but the positioning of our 1-year old in it is horrible. The hammock seat just causes him to slouch and the helmet pushes his head forward causing his chin to go to his chest, creating a very uncomfortable position for him as well as a dangerous position collapsing his airway.
Do you have a recommendation for a trailer that (1) has a structured bench seat instead of a suspended hammock and (2) gives enough room at the back of the head for a child wearing a helmet?
My preference is for a double trailer and I don’t mind spending a fair amount of money.
Maybe strap the car seat in the trailer until he gets bigger.

In all seriousness – one would’ve hoped that someone in possession of a Wahoo would be able to recognize “oh, this is a bike trail” and not continue driving along. Given that the car ended up in the canal near Chain Bridge, I would have to imagine that the driver switched from the CCT to the towpath at Fletcher’s Cove
You’re probably right. It maybe then was a case of failing to switch Google Maps directions back to “Driving” from “Walking”.

Some people…driver claims his GPS directed him from K Street in Georgetown onto the CCT (and then into the canal). “Not impaired” seems narrowly defined.

Another reason not to use your Wahoo for driving directions.

The bridge over 66 on Vaden is being replaced. It was closed in October 2019 for 10 months.
And the official Vaden Rd ped/bike detour is the Vienna Metro station pedestrian bridge. Be sure to walk your bike.

Anyone have recommendations for cantilever brake pads. I have a 1971 Schwinn Paramount tandem that I’ve had for a bit and I’m now working on to fit me right. I’ve never had a bike with cantilever brakes and given the additional rider weight and additional responsibility for the safety of the stoker, I’d like to make sure the brakes aren’t a problem.

Get nice long pads. I liked Kool Stop when I had these kinds of brakes. If you are willing to replace the rear wheel, you might also consider adding a rear drum brake for the stoker to grab.
