I was really riding to get a picture for drevil’s photo scavenger hunt, and without thinking I took my usual wormhole that allows me to minimize my riding on Rt. 29 to get into downtown Falls Church. I ride on Lawton Street, which parallels Rt. 29 (Lee Hwy/Washington St.). At the back corner of Madison Park there’s a path that connects into the parking lot of a business on Rt. 29. Since one of my common uses of this wormhole is to get to the State Theatre, I named it “Altered State”.

On my ride tonight I used the wormhole on the way there, but took the street on the way back. See https://www.strava.com/activities/4568838130

Needless to say, along the way I picked up the park that I ride around to get to the wormhole. Please forgive the night-time photo of the sign that says that the park closes at dark.

1/4/21 – In honor of National Spaghetti Day, take a pic of an Italian restaurant, preferably one you like and/or serves spaghetti. Caveat is that it can’t have “zz” or “Garden” in the name or the sign.

Growing up in the outer boroughs of New York City, I took it for granted that within walking distance of everyone’s house there was at least one family-run Italian restaurant that served red sauce Southern Italian home cooking. I was shocked and dismayed when I moved to Northern Virginia and found that Italian restaurants were scarce and generally pretty bad. Fortunately, the local restaurant scene has improved over the years. Thompson Italian is a little more upscale in its menu than my family’s favorite (Valenti’s on Foster Avenue in Brooklyn) was, and their food is quite good – an improvement over the Italian restaurant that previously occupied the same location, which wasn’t bad either.

For the record, so far this game is way ahead of Calvinball in the number of rule changes

The rules don’t seem to require having your bike in the pic. Am I missing something?

I rode and rode, but there’s no place like home for palindromes. As I got out my bike I spotted a rotor on my mountain bike. Then, when I stepped outside, there was my kayak! My wife’s Civic was parked out front, but that one’s been done too many times.

A couple of years ago there was a Pointless Prize for the most states ridden in during Freezing Saddles. My 9 or 10 states were not enough to win So yeah, ride wherever.

With the possible exceptions enumerated in the preceding posts

I figured house numbers would be the safest bet, since they’re more permanent than any “2021” year signs. Not every street has a house with a 2021 address, but I found one just across I66 from home.

I propose a pointless price for visiting and photoing (and pointing) to the four points (corners) of the DC boundary.

Even more pointless prize for pointing out all points in one pointless ride.

Thanks for sponsoring a prize! I love the idea of a Pointless Prize about Points!

I recommend you specify how you want people to report their rides – for example, using a particular hashtag in their Strava entries, or by creating a thread on the forum where people can report their rides.

It’s clearly Photoshop because the fox wouldn’t have been using such a long lens at that distance

My wife has a Catrike Trail. Unfortunately, she hasn’t been riding in a while – but maybe when I tell her there are other trike riders in the local area it will motivate her :)

Such a poor design. If you have to paint lots of arrows to explain how the intersection works, it’s probably not an intuitive design. And if you decide to paint double-headed arrows pointing in weird directions, it probably doesn’t help. But most of all, instead of providing extra turning room for people coming downhill/westbound as promised, you’ve squeezed them into a hairpin turn where they’re likely to run head-on into eastbound riders cutting the corner around the left of the circle.

Hopefully the mysterious Utah monolith is on its way east to be installed in the middle of the circle to pretty it up a little :)

Hey, all! I’ve started the list of Prizes – see the first post in this thread. Remember, if your prize is something that would benefit from its own thread (such as a place to post pictures for a photo contest), the prize sponsor should create the thread. I’ll link to it from the master list. Likewise, if tracking for your prize needs a hashtag, when you specify the hashtag I’ll add it to the list.

Interestingly, Falls Church has become a hub of outdoor live music, so would probably be a fun place to bike around the night of Halloween.

For example, I’ll be playing with Great Northern at Falls Church Distillers. The State, Liberty BBQ and Clare&Don’s often have live music too – though I haven’t checked their calendars for that night.
