2/7/2024 – A casting of Angels Unawares – a piece by Timothy Schmalz and commissioned by Pope Francis (the original is installed in St. Peter’s Square).  It depicts 140 migrants and refugees on a boat seeking safe harbor.  It was installed on the new “welcome plaza” on Catholic’s campus a couple of years ago.

#publicartfinder – 2/8/2024 – Stohlman VW, corner of Gosnell Rd and Leesburg Pike in Tysons.  I drove both styles of VW vans pictured here.  Learned to drive on the ’63 in Indiana and picked up the ’74 at the Westphalia conversion plant in Osnabrück

Sunday, 02/18/2023 (11 AM) Arlandria Public Art Ride & Wormhole Fun Ride

Explore public art in Alexandria and Alexandria, several very impressive wormholes, and bonus stop at the Pentagon 911 Memorial. There will likely also be a coffee stop at St Elmo’s in Del Ray and/or lunch during or after the ride. If you’re playing #publicartfinder this is a chance score some points, perhaps even more than 1 for the day! There will also be opportunities to score points for #fire, #flag, and possibly #scavhunt, depending on what the Wordle is for the day!

Start/End Point: Frank Mann Field next to Cora Kelly School, 3700 Commonwealth Ave, Alexandria, VA 22305.

This fun ride will be led by @Boomer_Cycles, lover of public art and wormholes, and (originator and longtime sponsor of the #publicartfinder pointless prize), and this year’s sponsor, @karenbikes2.

Participation is open to all who can ride a bike and is at your own risk so please wear a helmet, use bike lights and obey all road rules/trail etiquette.

Forecast for 2/18 is currently partly sunny with temps 37°- 41° with 10-20% chance or rain and winds 9-10 mph out of the SE. Of course there’s plenty of time for the forecast to change, and should it turn out to be for particularly unpleasant weather on the 18th, we’ll reschedule to Sunday 2/25.
