OK, Boomer. I took the bait and found this mural (actually was taken to this mural) on my ride today with a friend.

Boomer will probably say I’m pushing the definition again, but for my “public art” I present for your consideration: The Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Ave, Manhattan.

So close, yet so far … unless you are claiming the art in architecture award for the Corinthian columns?[emoji848]

There’s a fun wormhole with offroad elements over there too! I can’t claim it, but I’ll describe it for someone local who can snag it.

(apologies Boomer for the threadjacking)No problem, as knowledge is meant to be shared, but the #FSwormhole might be the better thread to jack with this intel;-)

ParticipantThe Einstein mural on 14th St. Instead of using chalk he is using graffiti to say E=mc^2. Einstein knows how to graffiti too!

ParticipantOne of my favorite pieces in Reston. The piece, and the artist, are very unpretentious. The colors continue along the side of the garage. They are also inside on the elevator shaft. Today I rode to the top of the garage to see if they continued all the way to the top floor on the elevator shaft.
Look closely to see my bike at the base!

ParticipantAnd back for your viewing pleasure – more chainsaw art from local artist Andrew Mallon! (At least I think they are by him). These are two pieces located at 824 N. Fillmore Street, in the Lyon Park neighborhood. Yes, they are behind a fence, but you can sort of see them over the fence from across the street. Of course, if you are closer, you can peek through the lattice fence to see them in their entirety. I’m sorry these aren’t in the front yard, because I’d love to have a better view of them. I’m not actually sure if these would be considered ‘public art’ since the are in the guy’s backyard. But hey! You CAN see parts of them from the street, sooo…

ParticipantThe Foggy Bottom flowers. It’s in a neighborhood that is tucked between K St, I-66, and New Hampshire. You have to go through an alley called Hughes Mews and it’s on the back of a small house. With the little garden it seems like it would be lovely in the warmer months.

ParticipantBoomer, you’ll be happy to know that I finally went back to the winged horses at Northrop Grumman in Sterling and got my bike in the photo too. Whew!

ParticipantThis is truly “natural” public art. It’s on the grounds of USGS in Reston. Click on the photo to see how cool it is.
This is what the geologists have to say about it:
Boxwork sandstone: “Waffle rock” resulted when sandstone was deposited in a stream, filling cracks and joints in existing rock. (Conemaugh Formation, 300 million years old)

ParticipantTrying to get a read from everyone as to whether they’re still up for this. High for the day is forecast to be 30 and there will be a lot of cloud cover. For a regular ride, it would be no big deal to just keep moving – but for an art ride, there’s a lot of stopping/starting up again and it’s a challenge to stay warm.
So … by response to my personal email, let me know if you definitely want to do this, please. westenhoff at gmail dot com is the place to let me know!
